If Steve Carell gets in supporting at the Oscars, he could really win it.January 9, 2015 at 4:36 am #172165
It’s an interesting question, because there is no reason that the BAFTA voters wouldn’t have known about his campaign in lead. If the academy is similarly inclined, and he takes the fifth spot in Supporting, it would actually resolve a bunch of issues. Also, I feel like he is actually more of a supporting role in the film.January 9, 2015 at 4:37 am #172166
I feel like J.K. Simmons has built up too much momentum as the Supporting Oscar frontrunner for Carell to topple him now.January 9, 2015 at 4:37 am #172167
I really think he could take down J.K Simmons if he gets in supporting. He’s got everything to win in supporting: comedy actor doing intense drama, the transformation, a villain, the subject matter and the film which will probably get in best picture at the Oscars.January 9, 2015 at 4:43 am #172168
YamilahR and he’s got the nose too. Nicole Kidman won in lead with a supporting character because of that, and Robert De Niro in Raging Bull.January 9, 2015 at 4:46 am #172169
Even in supporting, I don’t think he can win. While the Academy is casting their ballots, they’re probably going to see Simmons pick up every award on the circuit, including the televised ones. If/when that happens, there will be no doubt on Oscar night.Marcus Snowden (The Artist Formerly Known as msnowden1)ParticipantJanuary 9, 2015 at 6:31 am #172170
I don’t know if he is being put in Supporting Actor at the Oscars, but he certainly should. Channing Tatum was unquestionably the lead in Foxcatcher, while Carell was unquestionably a supporting character. BAFTA did the right thing by nominating him as such. Now, if he is nominated in either category at the Oscars, he’s not winning either way. Keaton and Simmons both seem like locks in both of those categories (and deservedly so). Carell does have a decent shot, though.Marcus Snowden (The Artist Formerly Known as msnowden1)ParticipantJanuary 9, 2015 at 6:34 am #172171

No, De Niro won Best Actor for Raging Bull because he, hands down, had the best performance of the year, male or female, in 1980. Kidman, on the other hand, I agree with.January 9, 2015 at 6:37 am #172172
With BAFTA, there isn’t quite the rigorous campaigning between categories. As the members vote, they decide where to place the actors, and it just so happened that they, rightly, put Carell into Supporting.
In terms of Oscar voting, I believe they have to check a box or something? Correct me if I’m wrong. So Carell will be on the ballot as Leading, not Supporting. I think. He should be placed into supporting, but they’ve stuck their necks on the line and placed him leading.January 9, 2015 at 7:16 am #172174
The Foxcatcher team should have campaigned for Carrell in Supporting from the very beginning and steered him away from an uber-competitive Lead field (where he is very likely be left off the nominee list from a late resurgence of Bradley Cooper and Jake Gyllenhaal) for a DEFINITE nomination in Supporting (and a strong chance for a win had he built the momentum away from Simmons from the get go). It’s a pity that nominations for Oscars is now closed so the BAFTA Supporting nod would have no impact.January 9, 2015 at 7:21 am #172175
Maybe he can pull a Benicio. Didn’t the Globes nominate Benicio for Lead at the Golden Globes and then the Oscars put him in supporting?Marcus Snowden (The Artist Formerly Known as msnowden1)ParticipantJanuary 9, 2015 at 7:26 am #172176

Yeah, he did, actually. He won in Lead at the SAGs, too, I believe.January 9, 2015 at 7:54 am #172177
Carell in supporting would solve many problems.
Let’s be honest: supporting actor has four locks. Simmons, Hawke, Norton and Ruffalo. Fifth spot is wide open but honestly none of the contenders is that deserving.
In lead someone really deserving (Carell, Spall, Gyllenahaal, Fiennes or Channing Tatum himself) is going to be left out.
Carell in supporting would make a great supporting list and would allow a great lead performance to be nominated.
BUT i have not seen Foxcatcher, so i can’t judge if it would be a category fraud or not!January 9, 2015 at 8:12 am #172178
Carell wont win; but his team will do whatever they feel they must in order to get Carell and the film a(nother) Oscar nom. BAFTA is a tad different in that Supporting and Lead choices depends a lot on the voters themselves.
But Steve isnt winning in Lead or in Supporting. Just get that nomination, along with Ruffalo, who’s nod also isnt so set in stone as we might believe, even at this point.
I’ve got FC on the list for BP but that is entirely because there could be ten nominees.
