I wanted to see who every thinks had the better debut Performance by a Female Singer. Ross and Streisand both became well known singers in the 60s, and both gave critically acclaimed performances in their debut films, which is not common for singers who star in films. Bjork also gave an outstanding performance in 2000’s Dancer in the Dark. All 3 performances are still remembered today as Outstanding, but which singer do you feel had the best debut Performance out of these 3 women?

I found it surprising the first time I saw “Lady Sings the Blues” that Ross didn’t even attempt to imitate Holiday. Nowadays biopics seem to want impersonations.

Did Ross get any flack back then for not sounding like Holiday?

I believe people were worried about her playing Holiday, but ultimately enjoyed her portrayal.

Streisand, though the other two are marvelous too. I could actually see even making a case for Ross over Minnelli.

I went with Ross. I love how much range she showed in LSTB.

I’d rank all 3 performances in my top 30 for actresses ever. I also chose these 3 based on them having legendary musical careers, and they all proved to be outstanding actresses.imo

Ross because she defied expectation and gave a legendary performance that is still remembered today. She demonstrated a wide variety of emotions and anguish beneath her fabulous, glittery, exterior. The fact that it was her first acting role says a lot.

Streisand, became a legend, a sucessful actress/singer/director/producer/lyricist/writer… and it all because of Funny Girl. And she tied with Katherine Hepburn, who already was a very respected actress, at the oscars… That tells everything.
