I voted for Teri Garr because I feel she defined the role of a Supporting scene-stealing character…and she brought that role to life more than what I think many actresses would have done. I guess it doesn’t hurt the role was written FOR her.

Jessica Lange’s win isn’t a very popular one and is often cited as a consolation prize for losing Best Actress that year…and while that may be somewhat true, I think it often forgotten that she even won two major critics awards for Tootsie (unless even the critics felt like they had to give her something).

She may not be the funniest aspect of Tootsie, but in many ways she was the heart of it. I always think of the last scene where she barely speaks after Dustin Hoffman starts his famous “I was better man….” monologue and then she says “I miss Dorothy”. The way she says it has always stayed with me and then her final comment asking about the dress is very sweet.

I don’t begrudge her the Oscar win at all. In fact, I wouldn’t be shocked if I end up making her my personal winner in the future. It is amazing how opinions of performances can evolve.

Teri Garr was better.  She should have easily beat Lange, who only won because voters knew there was no way in hell she was beating Streep in the Lead Actress category that year, but still wanted to reward her for her stellar performance in “Frances.”

Easily Teri Garr. Lange didn’t do anything, she was looking pretty.

I know it’s not the most popular of wins, but I love Lange in Tootsie. I am very much fine with her win (and it is definitely a Supporting role).

Do you think Garr would have won if Lange wasn’t in the category? I kind of think Glenn Close would have.

That might have been something for her to win in her film debut. She would have been a very worthy winner. Wonderful to see four comedic perfs nominated, and all deserved.   Kim Stanley is the only nominee in a wrenching Drama and might have won, since ‘wrenching’ dramas appear to satisfy the gravitas so often needed for a win.

    Stanley

    Warren

    Close

    Garr

If you watch the presentation on youtube Kim Stanley looks so mad when she loses. She doesn’t even try to hide it.
