She could’ve eat all scenary that she wanted but instead she went with subtlety and charm and the result was great. I love Meryl Streep (seriously her performance in Kramer vs. Kramer is one of the best performances I’ve EVER seen on screen) but she wasn’t all that good in this film. Her singing was astonishing but her acting was too campy for my taste.
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 13, 2015 at 6:59 pm #178143I was pleasantly surprised by Streep. Having seen so many productions of the stage show I didn’t think there was much left to do with the role and wasn’t really looking forward to the film BUT Streep brought so many quirky line readings to the it that I found myself laughing at lines I didn’t expect to. Also she brought an imperious domineering quality to “Stay with Me” that really was a new and powerful interpretation of the song.
Just the way she said “Who out there will love you more than I!” deserved a nomination.

February 13, 2015 at 7:20 pm #178145I think Anna Kendrick is charming and lovely as ‘Cinderella’. She’ so natural and beautiful and her voice is stellar (best in cast for sure). After I’ve seen the film I was shocked by her screentime, because people told me she doesn’t have lot do to, but I truly feel she is a significant part of the film, as much as Streep is. Very amazing performance. Incredible Singing.
I usually dislike if Meryl Streep is over the top (“Doubt” “August: Osage County”) because too much ‘actressing’ is a big no-no for me. However, for the role of the Witch, she needed to be campy and all over the place. And she managed to impress me. I think it’s a well-deserved 19th Oscar nomination for her, and I easily rank her second to Keira Knightley in “The Imitation Game” on the Oscar ballot. Her singing was probably second in cast (after Kendrick), but her acting was first in my opinion.
So for singing, it’s Kendrick (2nd for singing is Streep).
For acting, it’s Streep (2nd for acting are Blunt and Kendrick).
I voted on Streep in the end.

Streep, however, could not have been any better as The Witch. Her three biggest songs in the film “The Witch’s Rap” (in the “Prologue”), “Stay With Me,” and “Last Midnight” are outstanding, with the latter two being the definitive performances of those songs; yes, even better than Bernadette Peters, for those who idolize the Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I voted easily for Streep. I had very high expectations for her in this role and she absolutely exceeded them!

This.
I love Meryl, but here I just thought she was just good. Nothing particularly special. I thought that it was great she was having fun in a role for once, but right here, she was just fine.
Anna, on the other hand, was the best part of the movie for me, and she took a forgettable and simple character and made her something special.
I am going with Anna, who was the MVP of an average movie
ReplyCopy URLFebruary 14, 2015 at 1:14 pm #178152While I do love Anna Kendrick, there’s no comparison here. Streep wins it by a mile. She’s simply astounding as the Witch and she has a much showier role anyway. Streep is equally heartbreaking, hilarious, devious and magical in this role. So happy she got a nom for it. I’d actually rank her first in this year’s Supporting race as well.

February 14, 2015 at 3:03 pm #178154lol at me keep changing the voting period.
so let’s just make this into a rule: I will need a minimum of 30 voters to have an official result. I will wait one or two days, but if we reach the number, and no one seem to care about the topic anymore, i will start the new round.
🙂 Happy voting!
