An 83? What was everyone smoking when they saw it???

I saw this at the Melbourne Film Festival this year and boy was I underwhelmed.

I guess I approached it as a sci-fi/fantasy film about the end of the world. If I had known it was about schizophrenia I would have appreciated it a whole lot more.

I do think Jessica Chastain is this years movie find and she will be nominated in the supporting actress category for either this or “Tree of Life”.

However if this film gets a Best Picture nod – I’m going to scream!

Bette (love the name by the way!), I tend to agree with you. I too was underwhelmed when I saw it at TIFF. Didn’t dislike it exactly, but felt a little cheated at the end.

    My Review

Take Shelter is a marvel. It’s written and directed by Jeff Nichols, who is 32-years-old and has only directed one other feature film: 2007′s Shotgun Stories, which I haven’t seen. Both star Michael Shannon, who in this film gives a largely internal performance as a Midwesterner questioning his sanity, but he has the latent tension of a trap about to spring. The same anxiety carries into the film as a whole, which is about the gathering of storm clouds in the mind as well as in the sky … COMPLETE REVIEW

    Let’s talk about Michael Shannon.

Can he fit the ballot at all? Because his performace is definitely in my top 5 actors this year.

I liked the movie, but the damn theatre turned on the lights too early!!

I finally saw this film and loved it.  I posted my review below.  I also wrote a blog post about its portrayal of prodromal schizophrenia in case anybody is interested:   http://www.psychologyinaction.org/2012/03/28/recent-film-provides-insight-into-the-terror-and-complexity-of-prodromal-schizophrenia/

Take Shelter (4.5/5 stars = A-) Writer-director Jeff Nichols scored an
impressive breakthrough with this superlative drama that was a festival and
critical darling but was sadly not able to translate that into box office or
    award season attention.  The story
concerns a Midwestern couple played by Michael Shannon (in an award worthy,
performance that is both unnerving and heartbreaking) and Jessica Chastain (giving
yet another stunning performance in her year full of triumphs).  Shannon’s character is losing touch with
reality, marked by apocalyptic visions of doomsday storms that are becoming
more frequent, more intense, and harder to separate from reality.  He retains some degree of insight, seeking
out mental health professionals for their assistance, but ultimately he becomes
consumed with renovating the family’s storm shelter in preparation of the
impending storm.  The ending may be a bit
of a head scratcher and will definitely perplex many, but it is hard not to
have respect for the makers of this film.
The screenplay is taut and riveting and gets the mental illness at its
core remarkably accurate, the production values are on par with films made for
10 times its budget, and the acting is sensational.
