Many of those invited are female and/or people of color.

I reviewed the list of over 600 names and their respective job.

I am astounded that cinematographer Peter Pau can win the Oscar in 2000 for Crouching Tiger, Hiiden Dragon and yet not receive an invitation to join the Academy till 2016. Is it any wonder why people of color are so poorly represented in Oscar history?

    Tom Hiddleston
    Oscar Isaac
    Michael B. Jordan
    Brie Larson
    Patti LuPone
    Rachel McAdams
    Freida Pinto
    Mark Rylance

And Hayao Miyazaki wasn’t invited until after The Wind Rises was nominated in 2014! Shocking.

I believe it was around 360 people.

Well, then they basically doubled it this year. We’ll see what happens. I’m afraid things aren’t going to change much.

They’re really trying it with some of these names. Did they really need to pick the Wayans bros? But the diversity strides seem genuine at least, so yay Cheryl.

I think we will start to see even more divergence between Best Picture and Best Director judging by that lengthy list of newly invited directors. It is certainly odd how several nominees and winners from years gone by were not already members.

I think winning an Oscar should guarantee immediate membership.

One name that stood out to me as odd was Daphne Zuniga. The lady is best known for Melrose Place and One Tree Hill; why in the world is she being invited to join? It seems very odd to me. Her career post-Spaceballs consists mostly of TV movies and B-List TV shows.

The acting invitations struck me as a mix of famous white people and obscure non-white people.

I would hardly call Chadwick Boseman aka “Black Panther”, John Boyega, Ice Cube, Idris Elba, and especially Michael B. Jordan aka “Oscar Grant” AND aka “Apollo Creed” “obscure.” Famous? Absolutely! 😉

I assumed ONLY because of Spaceballs. Her and even more so newly minted 2-time Razzie “winner” (for Worst Actress and Worst Screen Couple) Dakota Johnson were 2 of the only genuinely questionable invitees I saw.
