I’d include Jason Reitman’s (Young Adult) name on that list…

My “most likely nominees” as of October 1 (alphabetical order):

Stephen Daldry (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close)

    Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist)

    Alexander Payne (The Descendants)

    Jason Reitman (Young Adult)

    Steven Spielberg (War Horse)

No way in hell David Yates will receive a Directing nom.

As of today I would predict Stephen Daldry, Steven Spielberg, Jason Reitman, Alexander Payne and Terrence Malick. Roman Polański and Woody Allen are spoilers. David Fincher may return. Nicolas Winding Refn won Best Director at Cannes which may or may not mean something.

Tomas Alfredson, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy

    Michael Hazanvicius, The Artist

Terrence Malick, The Tree of Life

    Alexander Payne, The Descendants

    Steven Spielberg, War Horse

Payne is a lock and War Horse looks like an Oscar juggernaut more and more every day.  Alfredson and Hazanvicius seem to be in on the coattails of films that will get many nominations.  I’m hoping Malick can get in and you never know (especially after that video with Nolan and Fincher praising Malick, maybe the directors will be out in force for him).

I know the talk of star power in the acting categories, but look at the contenders in this category!

I think Scorcese is getting nominated with “Hugo” The media is making a pretty big deal of him successfully using 3D. Plus, they sorta like to nominate him when he does well with films that are out of his comfort zone. He won’t win, but I think he will be nominated.

I wonder if we’re all underestimating Bennett Miller here.
