WTF is that supposed to mean? I’m reacting to the trailer that was just put out. I might like the film once I see it. But it looks like a worse 12 Years a Slave, something close to a TV movie. Am I supposed to measure my words and think twice before I say anything about “black movies”? Seriously?

Although I wasn’t the biggest 12 Years A Slave fan, I didn’t think it resembled a TV movie. Regardless, this trailer gave a strong feeling of that. Just didn’t excite me and I was excited beforehand after reading reviews and reactions. I don’t know, now I’m just lukewarm about this film. Maybe Fences (if it can be made in time, which is a HUGE if) will be the mostly black film that is able to break through for the first time since 12AS. Or maybe, it’ll only get acting nominations. Or maybe, it won’t get anything. Or maybe, it’ll be a disaster (unlikely in my opinion). Or maybe, it won’t be done in time. We just don’t know about Femces yet! I think it’ll be a critical successful even if a mild one, but I’m not buying a 2016 release just yet.

I’m fairly confident Fences will be released. Denzel knows he can cash in on the Oscars So White controversy, the timing is too perfect for an awards thirsty guy like him to just let it pass by. It might be a December release, which we know almost guarantees no Best Picture win, but it could be a strong contender for the acting races. I think Loving might deliver Best Actress.

I think the trailer is excellent, and Nate Parker looks like a Lead Actor contender. We’ll see how his directing works out. Maybe coming out after the benchmark set by “12 Years a Slave” is unfortunate, but it’s not like that’s the only slavery film that can and will ever be made moving ahead. Looking forward to seeing more footage.

I think the trailer looks very good, albeit similar in style to 12 years. But i’ll hold that judgement until I see the entire film.

In terms of Fences, I am very confident it will be done in enough time for an end of the year release, which im sure is exactly what they’re aiming for. I don’t believe any film with a non white cast should let the Oscars so white thing blow over. It was a legitimate argument and I’m very glad people spoke out so strongly about it. Here’s to the canvas of nominated work being more colorful next year.

Trailer was good. Wasn’t really wowed either but then again I wasn’t wowed by the trailer for “Spotlight” or “12 years a slave” either and ended up lovving those movies.

Nice tease. I’ll be there in October but did we really need another slave movie?

Why is it no one says that about WW2 movies?

Because movies that call out white supremacy take them out of their comfort zone.

Because slavery/Civil War is a huge part of American/World history, with thousands of experiences and stories to tell, yes, this movie, and others, should happen. We may not NEED more of them, in the same way we don’t NEED movies at all, but to just dismiss it as “There have been so many that it doesn’t matter anymore” is like dismissing any genre or subgenre. There will always be fans of those movies, and this trailer looks like this movie will be something special.
