Every actress who beat her at the Oscars has had trouble securing a subsequent nomination.

    Gwyneth Paltrow 1/1 (1998)
    Jennifer Hudson 1/1 (2006)
    Tilda Swinton 1/1 (2007)
    Brie Larson 1/1 (2015)

Marion Cotillard 1/2 (2007) is the lone conquer.

Larson won just a couple of years ago. That’s like saying Meryl Streep is finished in 1993 because she hasn’t received any nomination since 1990.

Besides, these examples are way too few to qualify as a curse. For Paltrow, she simply is more interested in her Goop nonsense. Hudson is a singer, not an actress.

Paltrow wanted subsequent nods. And after the Mary J Blige mess of this year I don’t see Hudson getting a sophomore notice as an improbability (see Helen Hunt).

Tilda Swinton clearly won because Blanchett had already an Oscar. She had won the BAFTA because she was British, but overall she didn’t really gain any momentum to “deserve” the Oscar. But ofc the BAFTA helped her in a weird way more than the SAG helped Ruby Dee. But Ruby Dee clearly won that on that slap scene alone. I’m saying all that because other winners had swept everything before the Oscar.

I think Swinton hurt her chances for future nominations (We Need to Talk About Kevin) with her speeches. At both the BAFTA and Oscars she said she’d be giving the statues to her agents.

People felt like she really didn’t want them and was ungrateful.

Well Swinton and Blanchett were the only 2 that hit all the pre-cursors (CC/BAFTA/GG/SAG) while Ruby Dee missed everywhere but SAG. And then only Swinton and Ronan were in BP nominees and Ronan won nothing and Swinton won something so she was going to win in the end,  especially since BAFTA have voting body overlap unlike the GG for Blanchetts win.

    That’s immature thinking.

    Jennifer Hudson 1/1 (2006)

Jennifer is mainly a singer, she didn’t do anything special except for Dreamgirls, especially following her family tragedy, so it’s a bit unfair to include her with Tilda Swinton and Paltrow who have done various films throughout the years.

The intend of the thread isn’t criticism at winners who were unable to secure sophomore nods. Just whomever beaten Blanchett at the Oscars usually hasn’t returned as a matter of pattern.

On the flipside, 6 of the 8 women Cate has beaten at the Oscars have also not earned any more nominations since losing to her (Portman and Streep being the exceptions).

I’m just glad Swinton is an Oscar winner.
