So Cate Blanchett is certainly in contention for lead
acting categories for her role in Carol, but she is also in the mix for her
    role in Truth.

I might be wrong, but doesn’t the Oscars only allow a single
nomination per category for an actor?

So it would seem they have to choose one performance over
    the other, not both.

Does anyone know if the Globes, SAG, Critics etc. have the
    same rule?

She will get 0 recognition for Truth from any awarding body. It’s not a significant film (it’s actually quite bad) and the performance is a rehash of everything she gave us in Blue Jasmine.

Carol is the bigger player, Carol will be what all her notices are for. And deservedly so.

You can be double-nominated at the Globes (Johnny Depp), BAFTA (Kate Winslet) and Critics’ Choice (Leonardo DiCaprio).  SAG has not double-nominated, I would assume because the rules preclude it like at the Oscars.

Yeah, I don’t think she’ll have a problem splitting the vote or anything. Carol is the film people will vote for.

Regarding the Globes, I don’t know if they’ve changed it recently or not, but stars are able to get multiple nominations in the same category. Some examples include Leonardo DiCaprio in 2006 (The Departed and Blood Diamond), Johnny Depp in 2010 (The Tourist and Alice in Wonderland), Meryl Streep in 2009 (Julie & Julia and It’s Complicated) and Tim Robbins in 1992 (The Player and Bob Roberts)

I just want her to get Best Actress nomination and “Carol” indeed seems more likely. I can also see double nod at the Golden Globes. Actually it’s a little bit of shame that everyone keeps forgetting about “Cinderella”. She’ll maybe get Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actress for that and that’s it whereas it isn’t less deserving than, say, Meryl Streep’s role in “Into the Woods”.

The Academy rule is so absurd, btw. There’s no justifiable reason why an actor shouldn’t have the opportunity to be recognized twice in one category when artists in other categories can be–it typically happens in Cinematography and Score.

I think the only reason for the rule is that it would be awkward for the telecast having the same actor twice, especially if they win as they’ll have their name called first before we know which film they won for. Most other categories can name the film first, though the presenters don’t always do this. To me this isn’t a good enough reason not to allow multiple nominations for actors in the same category if they deserve it.

I agree, Academy’s rule makes no sense, but at the same time I just want Blanchett to be nominated this year and Carol seems like an obvious choice. Truth, with all the controversies surrounding it, disappointing box office and mixed reviews, would probably not happen anyway. I also agree that she totally deserves recognition for Cinderella. I haven’t seen many Supporting Actress contenders yet, but I saw Fonda and Banks and Blanchett is way more deserving.

Cate’s turn in Carol is much more pretentious. I agree that she actually gives a better perf in Truth, but it doesn’t seem like she’s acting because she looks/sounds sooooo Cate-ish

I thought “Truth” was amazing and deserves a million Oscars!

I agree with you, John, that Carol is the bigger player, but not because it was a better movie. Truth is better than you’re (over)stating

There’s that pretentious “pretentious” argument…lol. I think if Truth had made more money at the box office she could have easily gotten nominated for that and Harvey can campaign Rooney in lead, which she is — whether Rooney would get in is another question, but I think she’d deserve to win (but I’ll love it when Brie wins).

But since audiences didn’t care, and I think it was a little hurt from politicized people who still think Bush was an A-OK president, I don’t see SPC pushing her over someone like Maggie Smith.

    Guyyyyyyyyyys!!!!

Ugh, I just thought Truth was SO melodramatic. I could absolutely NOT with the slo-mo zoom-ins on each character showing their reactions and the where-are-they-nows at the end. COME ON! Both Mapes and Rather were one-note and all of the supporting cast were stock/had no impact on the story or film whatsoever. Don’t get me wrong, Cate is fantastic in both. She’s always fantastic, but she gave us nothing new in Truth.

Give me the pretention of Carol (our eventual Best Picture winner) EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK!

The sticking point to this conversation though is that the reality is Truth is not factoring into the race, at least not in the way that Carol is and will continue to. Carol has below-the-line opportunities and is already picking up notices. It’s going to be the film that voters remember and think about when they receive their ballots so it’s safe to assume it’s the Cate performance that they will, too.

I think she could pull off a double nom at the Globes with Truth and Carol but sadly it doesn’t look like Truth is getting the support Carol already has. I haven’t seen Carol yet but she was amazing in Truth and I would back her getting nominated for Truth but once again, I can’t say if it should be over Carol or with Carol
