Couldn’t find a thread on this, so I started one.

Just caught a screening of this film and it was everything I wanted and more. If you are a fan of coming-of-age films, this is definitely one to check out. Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit, Pitch Perfect 2) was a great casting choice to play a perfectly awkward teenager struggling with life. The film was giving me John Hughes vibes with a mix of Easy A, with a little slice of drama. I went with a friend who said this film was exactly her high school experience. This film has easily shot into my Top 3 of “Year’s Best”.

I would love to see Steinfeld get in for Comedy Actress at the Globes.

Anyone else see this yet? Thoughts?

My area has had several screenings for this film already, so I’m wondering if anyone else has seen it and would share their thoughts.

I was an extra on this; you can actually see me five times in the red band trailer. The first-time director had no vision; she got coverage from more angles than I have ever seen a director shoot. But hey, they could afford it, seeing as her producer is worth half a billion dollars.

I really like Hailee Steinfeld’s music. I could totally see her picking up a Golden Globe comedy nomination to make up for them shutting out True Grit. They nominated Quvenzhané Wallis for Annie also on the comedy side after shutting out drama Beasts of the Southern Wild.

I screen films for press in my area, and I’ve already screened it twice. Audiences love it. It’s another classic high-school, coming of age story. Hailee Steinfeld COMPLETELY KILLS IT. One of the best performances of the year, IMO.

Should be nominated for Best Comedy/Musical at the Globes AND Hailee Steinfeld but I don’t expect to see either show up on nomination morning.

Hailee Steinfeld is absolutely fantastic here and it’d be a damn shame if she doesn’t pick up some big nominations for this. Having seen both Ruth Negga (Loving) and Annette Bening (20th Century Woman) I would prefer an Oscar nomination for Steinfeld over them – tho I think Bening should go supporting.

The film itself is very good and could sneak into the Comedy/Musical category if it does well at the box-office or just in the eyes of the HFPA. The supporting cast is very strong as well, but no big stand-outs. Definitely worth catching.

This makes me happy to hear.

Great film. Hailee Steinfeld has one absolute *killer* dramatic scene, and a film full of genius comedic moments. Top notch performance from her. I agree, one of the best I’ve seen so far this year.

The script is also a star player here, and is brilliantly lean, while delivering on the comedy front just as strong as it does on the more dramatic side.

In terms of the supporting cast, I have to say Blake Jenner nailed it. He has had a great year with this and Everybody Wants Some! which people don’t seem to be recognising in the slightest. A real shame.

Woody Harrelson is also fantastically comedic – slightly less than what we saw him do in Friends With Benefits, but still a great lighter relief to Steinfeld’s more ‘gloomy’ comedic undertones.

Definitely worth going to watch it – a sound directorial debut. Steinfeld though is THE reason to watch this.

I thought the same thing about Jenner. While most films would have just gave him a generic brother-role, this film really developed into someone with much more depth and weight.
