Finally a sequel to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is happening. Ish.

Fede Álvarez is directing The Girl in the Spider’s Web for Sony Pictures but featuring a new still undefined cast. Set to be released on October 5, 2018.

    Jane Levy as Lisbeth Salander?

I’m just glad we’re getting a sequel even though I’d much rather have The Girl Who Played With Fire, which was IMO the best of the series. We absolutely do not need to adapt the third book which was just a slog.

Of course Alvarez is bringing along Jane Levy, shoulda known. Lisbeth is not an easy role to nail but Mara did it perfectly (I don’t consider her that fantastic of an actress but the dead eyes definitely work for Salander). I’m cautious about whether or not Levy can bring the right fierceness to the role but she was pretty grungy/had the right attitude in Don’t Breathe. But I’ll be biased either way because I was hoping Mara would reprise, but hey.

I found The Girl in the Spider’s Web to be a massive disappointment where Lagercrantz pretty much neutered Blomkvist and turned Lisbeth into almost a parody of herself. And it failed to be as interesting as even the least interesting Larsson book. But translating it into film could make it come out very differently, i.e. much better. It might just hinge on the director. I really liked Don’t Breathe but liking Chronicle didn’t make Fantastic Four a good movie re: Josh Trank. Overall definitely something to look out for, but I’m glad at least something is moving in regards to the project. I feared the Millennium Trilogy sort of fell off in popularity a bit after it camped out on the bestseller list in the US but this is good attention.

Well, I knew it was inevitably going to happen this way, but I’m still very disappointed. What David Fincher and his team (Steve Zaillian, Jeff Cronenweth, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, Kirk Baxter, Trish Summerville) as well as Daniel Craig and especially Rooney Mara all managed to accomplish right in the wake of the Swedish films was truly remarkable.

As for the new Salander, I’m sure they’ll go for a big name this time around. One of the contributing factors to the underwhelming box office of Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo was lack of marquee names. (Nobody cared, or really still cares, about Daniel Craig unless he’s James Bond). Sony won’t want to make that mistake again.

Unfortunately, just as many could see no other actress in place of Noomi Rapace as Salander, I will not be able to imagine anyone but Rooney Mara now. Not particularly looking forward to this.

I think there is a good chance he will bring Levy into the part, or at least try to; Alvarez clearly likes working with her, she has the potential for grungy scowling intensity (though not as good as Mara would play it), and she can fit the physical bill nearest to Mara, who was pretty much Salander if she walked out of the book.

I’m not a fan of any of the casting rumors at the moment (Portman, Johansson, even Vikander, who isn’t nearly chalk-white enough, but so was Rapace I guess). Hopefully they can do it justice. Lack of marquee names could have been an issue but it wasn’t the biggest (for me it was the 160-minute runtime about potentially alienating material when the Swedish movies just came out, regardless of how popular the trilogy was stateside). I think they’d get equal flak if they cast a bunch of lazy A-list names, like throwing Johansson in Ghost in the Shell. Imagine if they cast JLaw or Shailene Woodley…

God damn though jasonface, when you named the whole team you made me realize how much I wish Fincher was doing this. That product was pitch-perfect. Can’t have it all, I guess.

    ..And I care about Daniel Craig… );

The 2011 film was good, and while I was excited for a sequel, I won’t watch without Rooney Mara or David Fincher. Even Daniel Craig was a good Mikael Blomkvist. Why ruin a good combination?

I read they’re supposedly eyeing either Natalie Portman or Scarlett Johansson for Lisbeth Salander. I love them both but Mara will always be the best for this role, other than the Swedish actress who was in the original films.

I’m fine with natalie but please not Scarlett. They could cast Alicia Vikander since she is Swedish and she is doing Lara Croft anyways.

I can’t buy Vikander as Salander — too soft-figured and baby-faced (which made her role really unbelievable in Jason Bourne — who’s letting high schoolers run the CIA?) and I just don’t see her having the same vicious/stoic intensity that the role demands. On a lesser note, as I mentioned before, I don’t think she fits it physically because, like half-Spanish Rapace, she has this really enviable olive skin that is at odds with chalk-white, bone-thin Salander — but it worked with Rapace so there can be some leeway there. But I’m not big on casting someone who looks less like Salander after Mara made her walk off the page; she’s not like the more generic Blomkvist as of course Larsson gave her an extremely distinctive appearance. It would take a lot of work to make Vikander look more believable and that’s where I would prefer Levy. But hey, I didn’t think JLaw looked anything like Katniss when she got hired for Hunger Games, and they made that work.

That being said, I would prefer Vikander (good old Swede) out of the three listed. Portman could do the intensity and Johansson the dead-eyes but I don’t see either being convincing Lisbeths. I see myself thinking a lot about who could be a good fit for the part but I just goddamn keep coming up with Mara. This blows.

Those brutal scenes with her ‘guardian’…I can’t think of anyone who could’ve done a better job in that role. In that scene. Fucking Sony I swear.

Rosamund Pike would be an interesting choice.

But could she look believable with the bleached eyebrows, nipple piercings, facial piercings, weirdly placed tattoos and jet black hair? Also, I believe Lisbeth Salander is supposed to be short, whereas Rosamund is 5’9. Rooney Mara is 5’3.

I totally forgot about the height! Yeah never mind about her. I don’t think I’ve seen her in a movie without her blonde hair lol.

And that’s with Mara already “towering” over the book Salander, who is supposed to be 4’11”. But since I could have Rosamund Pike in any movie I’d cast her as Erika Berger…

God damn, now I’m even more pissed. The Girl in the Spider’s Web deals with Lisbeth’s estranged evil sister, who looks a lot like her except with more traditional beauty and blond hair. Filled perfectly by none other than Kate Mara, opposite Rooney Mara. We could have had it all.

I honestly think it would be hilarious if they cast Kate Mara and blood aside I think she’d actually be good.
