YA-pandering, no B&W, lead actor too old, unfit director. Unless it gets good reviews, no thanks.

Philip Noyce is actually the first competent director Streep has worked with in quite a few years (maybe since Nancy Myers).

I can already tell from this trailer that the choices they’ve made are going to do a disservice to truly great source material.

Meryl Streep in Angelica Huston drag is sorta awesome, but still bummed out over this first trailer.

Yeah, I’m very put-off by the visual choices seen in the trailer.  It looks like any other sci-fi teen flick produced in the past five years.  This really had potential…I was hoping the director would do something really interesting in the scenes with the Giver, maybe drop everything out to a black background, darkness, and have just the two characters speaking to one another.  You know, make this very psychological and cerebral.  Bridges’ voice wasn’t anything to write home about and had me thinking of the Dude.  Anyway, I know it was just a trailer, but there wasn’t anything to make me think this could be special.

That’s what I said in the official Meryl thread.

A Promising Alternative for a Supporting Actress bid.  The Giver VS. Suffragette then for Meryl.

Per (EW article) Jeff Bridges as the producer, they took some liberties and expanded the role of Meryl as Chief Elder including some romantic angle on his & Meryl’s character.  Additionally, Meryl was the 1st & only choice of Jeff and this is a passion project for him.  A Best Supporting Actor bid for Jeff may be in the offing as well.

All of this.  This could have been so much more, but it looks extremely forgettable.

This is looking like another YA dystopian mess. No thanks.

I understand were the director is coming from. Shoot in black and white, and you alienate most YA audiences. Shoot in color, and you alienate fans of the book. Since fans have been waiting so long for a film version of ‘The Giver’ to come out, this movie needed a director who could black and white without being afraid of the consequences. Perhaps the worst thing about this trailer is that since it comes across as your typical YA sci fi film, many audiences may skip it and miss out on a great story.

The Lego Movie – For Your Considration in all categories including Best Animated Feature.

Well, I’ll check it out. I like some of Noyce’s films and the cast looks rather older than the characters in the book. But, so what,  I’d agree with ConMan in that, it’s a thoughtful story ala Brave New World for teens.

This looks like The Host all over again and that film was dreadful.
