Many people claim the old “sequels are never better” mantra, while many others claim that this is one of the only cases of the sequel out-doing the original.

    Your choice?

Both films have terrific aspects. I’ll go with The Godfather, a film which astonished me, and resurrected  careers and also made them. Overall I’d say it’s a family saga which rivals Luke Skywalker’s.

Part 2. I personally think the Godfather series is overrated. Not bad but overrated.

I think the first film is the overall better achievement in terms of editing, narrative scope, and character progression. Michael doesn’t complete his fall until Part II, but the ending of the first film is enough for one to realize just how changed a man he is. The first film is honestly something that I can’t turn away from when I see it. Every scene is engrossing to me. The way time elapses over decades is depicted in such a crisp fashion, and there’s a bit of melancholy that gets to me as I watch the Corleone empire crumble so gradually. I don’t carry quite the same level of passion for the second film (though it’s still a favorite of mine). Having Brando’s presence loom over the original (even when not onscreen) probably helps.

That said, Part II probably has some of my favorite individual scenes of the series. The ending, in particular, is one of my all-time favorite movie moments, transitioning from the nostalgic flashback to Michael’s isolated reflections. John Cazale also gives the greatest Supporting performance of the series (I’d say even surpassing De Niro), and Al Pacino was never better.

I actually like Part III best of all, especially Sofia Coppola’s performance. OR NOT. What a terrible movie that was.

I prefer Part 2. The scenes at Lake Tahoe are so gorgeously shot (I think this is the last film in Technicolor – I could be wrong). The DeNiro scenes in New York City sometimes drag but the rest flows smoothly. It hardly feels like 3 hrours.

    Lol! But Gravity isnt, correct?

The Godfather is one of the pillars of great, American cinema.

Part II stayed with me a little longer, but it’s very close. I love the flash-back structure with the sepia-toned past and how it complements the present, and Pacino’s performance is even greater than Brando’s. Though I do think Part I is slightly better edited.

Whichever one I watch last, I say that it’s better. At the moment, that is the Godfather 1. Once I watch the second again, it will likely change. To be safe, I always put them as being equal.

I actually dont mind Godfather 3. It helps knowing why Sofia stars in her dad’s film. A director, yes. An actor? She’s as good as Ben Affleck anyways.

It’s Andy Garcia I mainly watch 3 for. He deserved that nomination. In fact, I mostly like watching Andy in anything, for example,  City Island.

Pretty much my thoughts. Both are just so fantastic. I love watching them.

Yes it was. It was defintely made purely for the paychecks the main principals and Coppola would recieve.

You’re right Garcia is the saving grace of that film.
