The companion short film for Pixar’s The Good Dinosaur has been announced!

Sanjay’s Super Team directed by Sanjay Patel.

The seven-minute short begins with young Sanjay watching cartoons and eating cereal in a bland, beige room as his father jingles a bell, beckoning him to join in meditation. Reluctant and bored by the ceremony, Sanjay begins daydreaming with the gods appearing like superheroes. As the daydream progresses, the color, light and animation of the film grows increasingly dazzling and cosmic, and Sanjay grows closer to understanding his father’s inner world.

This is kind of a new ground for Pixar, tackling cultural identity, as how a young child comes to terms with it in a geographic region where he is a minority. Also marks the first time a non-white director helms a project for the studio – along with Pete Sohn, korean american, who is actually the director of The Good Dinosaur.

With Lava failing to get a nod last year and then being ineligible for this, Sanjay’s Super Team could be our frontrunner for Animated Short Film?

I am hesitant about The Good Dinosaur. I’m happy that it’s Pixar and that it will most likely be very good, but with Bob Peterson, who created the original story getting the boot halfway through production, that kinda has me worried. Behind the scenes turmoil isn’t necessarily the death knell as shown with Ratatouille, but still. I am still going to see this and most likely love it.

And check out my thread for Inside Out that I made if you haven’t already.

This movie had me at the word “Dinosaur”. Will watch anything with them in it or about them.

I look forward to every Pixar film no matter what. While I’m more excited for Inside Out, this film also sounds like it could be great. It will be interesting to see if there’s any debate about which is better by the end of the year, because Oscar has never had to choose between Pixar properties.

That will be interesting. Pixar vs Pixar = … Pixar win? Pixar split?

^It would really depend on how big a difference there is in their reception. If Inside Out becomes a Best Picture nominee like some have been suggesting, it won’t be a contest at all.

It would be wild to have a tie between Inside Out and The Good Dinosaur, solidifying the fact that Pixar is the one to beat, but wouldn’t ever happen.

I think I remember reading that, despite being about dinosaurs, this is Pixar’s most realistic looking film and dang, some of that early footage sure looks it…now give me a full trailer!!!

Yeah that wasn’t a good trailer. The animation gives me a 2 year old vibe. Unless this is a masterpiece Inside Out has animated feature on lock.
