Personally, I enjoy supporting performances more than lead ones because I am always in awe of the amount of impact a role can have with such limited screentime.

What do you feel are the greatest supporting actor and actress performances of all time?

Both of mine are rather recent. I would consider Javier Bardem’s performance in No Country for Old Men to be #1, closely followed by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight and Robert De Niro in The Godfather Part II. On the actress side, I can’t help but say Mo’Nique in Precious was one of the best performances of recent memory. Cloris Leachman in The Last Picture Show and Meryl Streep in Kramer vs. Kramer are close followers. I also liked Jessica Lange in Tootsie and Whoopi Goldberg in Ghost.

What do you think are the greatest?

I agree Mo’Nique undoubtly has to have put on one of the greatest performances of all time.
I also love Whoopi Goldberg no doubt put on one of the best comedic supporting performances as well.
I also love Dianne Wiest in BOB, Cate Blanchett in The Aviator, Meryl Streep in Kramer vs Kramer, Jessica Lange in Tootsie, and I know I will get flack but I loved Geena Davis in The Accidental Tourist. Boring ass film, but her scenes were memorable.

I never understood why Al Pacino’s performance in The Godfather is considered a supporting role, the entire film was basically about him and I’m pretty sure he got more screentime than Brando. Both had damn fine performances nonetheless.

Off the top of my head:

    Gents:
    Christoph Waltz – Inglorious Basterd’s
    Ian Mckellen – LOTR
    Niels Arestrup – Un Prophete

Gotta give my thoughts on my “ladies” category. I think young actresses tend to blow me away the most (and for the oddest reason always go understated)

    Jill Clayburgh, Running with Scissors

What a performance! While I wouldn’t put her in my Top 5 greatest of all time list, she definitely deserves a mention in this topic. Clayburgh did a fantastic job in that film, personally I think her performance was the strongest supporting performance in 2006. (and we had several good ones in that year aka Kikuchi / Barazza, Breslin, Julie Walters in Driving Lessons, Collette, Maura / Duenas in Volver, Blunt…so it’s kind of a big thing to say.)

Amy Adams in Junebug and Sidney Greenstreet in The Maltese Falcon probably top my list.

    Best Supporting Actor

    Marlon Brando, The Godfather
    Chris Cooper, Adaptation
Karl Malden, A Streetcar Named Desire
    Joe Pesci, Goodfellas
    Christopher Walken, The Deer Hunter

Using Academy placements, I’d replace Brando with Pacino, and Casey Affleck would likely come close to ranking for ‘The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford’, though I consider his role to be a Lead role.

    Best Supporting Actress

    Amy Adams, Junebug
    Ruth Gordon, Rosemary’s Baby
Cloris Leachman, The Last Picture Show
    Katharine Ross, The Graduate
    Uma Thurman, Pulp Fiction

And my winners for best supporting performance of all time would likely be… Christopher Walken and Cloris Leachman.
