The Help was a superb film, but do you guys think it desrved to be nominated for more than just 4 Oscars, and should it have won more than one (picture especially), and should have Jessica Chastain won over Octavia Spencer, and was anyone else from the film snubbed?

THE HELP isn’t a superb film and Octavia Spencer’s victory to the podium should have been questioned several times during the season. Davis would have made a lovely Best Actress winner. I’m getting more peaceful about Streep’s win, knowing that down the road it will prevent more deserved victories for her.

I loved The Help! It was easily my third favourite film of 2011, after Hugo and War Horse.

Honestly The Help was my favorite film that year whatever anyone thinks about it haha. I would’ve given it nominations for:

    Best Picture
Best Director (Bump Payne or Allen)
    Best Actress
Best Supporting Actress (Spencer winning, Chastain, and maybe even Dallas Howard in which case she would bump McCarthy)
Best Adapted Screenplay (Only seen Descendants but if I had to pick one I still would go with the help)
Best Original Song (Bump either song easily but they’re should have been 5 nominees)
Best Costume Design (Only seen The Artist so sure bump that one)

So I would have given it a total of 9 nominations, and probably a couple wins, so it’s 4 was definitely less than ideal

Davis deserved to win supporting actress. Spencer was not win-worthy and I’m not sure if she even makes my personal lineup. Chastain and Dallas Howard were terrific, as was the great Cicely Tyson.

I would also give it nods for original score and song. Not sure I’d give it anything else.

The Help was my favorite film of that year (or maybe it was tied with The Descendants). And I was actually quite surprised that it was able to retain its buzz through the fall despite the relatively mixed reviews and supposed “light-weightedness.” But, yeah, I love the cast. My favorite scenes were literally the 2 Cicely Tyson sequences. And I think Bryce Dallas Howard was very underrated (not saying she was Oscar worthy…but she deserved some praise…same goes for Emma Stone).

I think the movie (along with its 3 actual nominations) should have been nominated for Song, costumes, and even cinematography. I’m fine with it not being nominated for Screenplay and Direction.

Strange Love/Hate relationship with this movie. Loved the perf’s especially Tyson, Spencer and Davis but hated the movie. Just one ridiculous unrealistic scene after another.

So in other words, you want her to lose out even if she deserves it?

Wasn’t a huge fan of the movie, but I thought the acting nominations were deserved.

It wouldn’t make my top ten (or twenty… or thirty) for the year, though.

I was disappointed with the movie because the book was, honestly, one of the best books I’ve ever read.  The movie cut out some of my favorite parts from the book.  But after the initial disappointment after the first viewing from comparing it to the book, I was pleasantly surprised how much more I liked it the second time around.

I think it more than deserved the SAG ensemble award.  I also think Spencer totally deserved the Oscar.  And I knew she had it sealed when I first saw the movie.  Bryce Dallas Howard was robbed of a nomination, imo, and I wouldn’t have cried if Janney were to have gotten in as well.  Both Viola and Meryl were equally impressive (for obviously very different reasons) to me, so I was happy with whoever won that year for actress.  That last scene between Davis and Howard is KILLER.

2011 was a very weak year for movies, at least in my opinion.  The only best picture nominees I enjoyed were Midnight in Paris, The Artist, Moneyball, and The Help.  I was meh about The Tree of Life and War Horse, stongly disliked Extremely Loud and Hugo, and can’t even bring up The Descendants in a conversation without getting mad.  So I was happy The Help got in for BP.  Wouldn’t have given it the win, though.

Always thought Chastain gave the best performance in the film.  I knew the Oscar was Spencer’s once the nomination were announced but for me Chastain is holding an Oscar IOU.

Honestly one of my favorite scenes ever acting-wise. They both 100% knocked that scene out of the park. Some of the favorite performances

Putting Davis in lead actress was a big mistake. She’d have won everything if she was in supporting.

Spencer was not even the best supporting actress in her movie, Dallas Howard and Tyson were miles better. The movie is really safe, but the cast was good. The nominations that were deserved, but didn’t happened were original song and costumes.

I thought the movie was a solid B, but seriously overrated all season long. Viola Davis is fantastic in it though and should’ve won over Meryl (that category was TERRIBLE too!).

A true shame Octavia Spencer swept everything in sight. That has to be one of the most one-dimensional performances ever to win that category. Lord knows how that happened. Jessica Chastain, even though I find her extremely overrated, was much better  (again, that was one weak-ass category if I ever saw one).

I dunno, I guess it was fairly recognized at award shows. It was the public hype that was a bit too much.
