Since there doesn’t seem to be a new one from the previous forum, i’ll start it. Not to mention, it has now past 150 Million at the Box Office at this point.

Their first award, and it’s as an ensemble

Although she’s barely mentioned in many reviews (and in discussion for the film), Spaceck does provide (at least for the audience I saw it with) the biggest laugh in the movie. She has little screentime and isn’t as good as Chastain, but I preferred her performance over Spencer’s.

While I loved Sissy in the film, I didn’t think she was nearly as captivating as Spencer. Spencer, simply took the performance someplace else. I also see that Jessica Chastain is being honored with the Hollywood Breakthrough Actress Award for her mutli performances this year. It’s looking more and more likely Viola will be pushed for lead, to make room for 2 additional actresses to fill supporting spots. Likely, those will be Spencer, and Chastain, respectively.

I really don’t remember specific Spencer moments (I think she cried at some point, but Davis had the best crying scenes). For me, she was continuously outperformed by the other actors in her scenes.

Save the ensemble, the film isn’t good at all.

I really enjoyed this film.  For some strange reason many were comparing it to The Blind Side and I expcted the worse.  The comparisons were completely unwarranted as this was a well directed film featuring one of the best ensembles in a long time.

Here are more of my thoughts.

    ^

My hope is that it does comparable or better Box Office than “The Blind Side”.

@ryan_fernand, I thoroughly enjoyed it, too. And we won’t we start talking about the performances.

@babypook, i’m not sure, Box Office wise where The Blind Side is current. But, The Help is sure off to a great start.

I agree LKMOSCAR that Spencer doesn’t really have a standout moment, but I do think she was good throughout. For my money, Chastain was best in show, then Spencer, then Howard, followed very closely by Janney of the supporting players. I personally see Davis and Stone as the leads.

She may not have a standout moment, and yet when I look back on the film it’s her character that I remember the most. She was the perfect foil to Davis, and she maintained it throughout. Kudos to her.

    But everyone was terrific, imo.

I can see a SAG nomination and a win there, but not at Oscar. That’s just a feeling right now. I guess we’ll see how the awards circuit rewards the film/cast.

Loved this movie! Yes, it has flaws but the movie is elevated by the best ensemble of the year. The casting could not have been better. I’m especially happy for Jessica Chastain and Emma Stone. The former truly is the breakout star of Hollywood in many years. Just looking at the performances she’s given and the movies she’s been in just shows how great her career will unfold. As for its awards prospects-

    1. Definitely a Comedy for GGs

    2. Viola Davis is co-Lead with Emma Stone.

    3. Chastain and Spencer would be very very deserving of noms.

    4. It would be a travesty if this lost SAG Ensemble.

Interesting because my current feeling is that Davis and Spencer could both win the Oscar (with Chastain nominated as well)…

It hasn’t been released in the UK yet, though, correct?

Well, the GD experts/oscarologists are picking her as the front runner right now. I suppose it’s very possible.
