The Hunger Games was an amazing film and I cannot wait for Catching Fire, but do you guys feel that The Hunger Games deserved any Oscar attention in any of the categories?

The ones they give out for making a bunch of money maybe. Like, what, Makeup or VFX or w/e.

    Main categories, no.

I think The Hunger Games aids Jennifer Lawrence’s chances at future Oscar nominations.

Isn’t it the highest-grossing film to be lead by a female? I think the success of this sequel will help JLaw secure yet another Oscar nomination for American Hustle.

With that said, I liked the movie a lot more than most of the superhero blockbusters.

I enjoyed this film far more than what won BP that year. I’ve seen this several times and own the DVD. The BP winner, I will never watch again, unless I’m forced into it by the ruling class over at Panem.  It’s not a perfect film, and I’m hoping Catching Fire improves on the first. But a female lead,  a rebellion against an unspeakable, dystopian society, Donald Sutherland, and that gorgeous song from Swift are like real cherries on a sundae. Also, I dont know why the latter part of my post is bolded. I didnt go anywhere near the B button.
As to the film deserving Oscar consideration, I’d say well, why not? Song, Vx, adapted screenplay, cinematography, they were in tough sure. But at least there’s the Saturns.
I’d have been miffed big time however, if The Hunger Games received nominations when Cloud Atlas, did not.

    Ps @ SxE: Agreed.

I’d certainly have nommed JLaw for this over the rubbish she won for.

Film was far better than at least half of the Best Picture noms as well.

It’s good but leaves out critical plot points from the book. Catching Fire will definitely help Jennifer get nominated for American Hustle.

I really liked it. In my main awards, I have it a nomination for song “Safe & Sound” and both Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence were on my shortlist for Lead Actor and Actress.

Josh was 100% supporting and should have been nowhere near lead. Peeta is no Dr Lecter.

Anyway, Catching Fire may get song and maybe cinematography. Maybe.

Cinematography is such a long shot. Very unlikely. The DP is not someone they would feel the need to recognize. Looking at his IMDB, his career doesn’t skew Oscar-like films at all, and first-time nominees tend to come from films very competitive in BP or at least nommed in tons of categories. Harry Potter only got in once, for example, and only because the DP was Delbonnel who had been nominated twice before.

I’m also not sure it could get song, but I think it’s the film’s only chance at a nom. But remember those Twilight songs never made it in even when they had respected artists (the academy even snubbed Thom freaking Yorke).

I felt the movie didn’t hold up to the greatness of the books, something that made the books more powerful that didn’t transition very well onto screen. Even then, it’s a step up from most YA films that get put out nowadays, and it was at least enjoyable when I watched it.

The only nod it would have deserved was for “Safe and Sound”, an excellent song. As an enormous fan of Jennifer Lawrence, I wasn’t all that impressed with her performance. It was just ok, and it didn’t hold a candle to her portrayal of Tiffanny in SLP (and even then, I’m still not entirely sure she deserved that Oscar…). Josh definitely didn’t deserve a nom, and all the tech VFX, Makeup, Costume, etc. were alright, but not up to par with the actual nominees.

I have high hopes for Catching Fire, and it will certainly help Jennifer to get a third nomination (for American Hustle). Aside from that, it remains to be seen how the film will do itself, but the trailers are already making it seem like a vast improvement!

Hutcherson was totally lead to me. I don’t care where they are “placed” at the FYC pages.

Well, I enjoyed watching Woody Harrelson. His Haymitch Abernathy is straight out of the novels. And Sutherland’s part should expand considerably, which is fine by me.
Btw, imo, those novels arent Shakespeare, but they are infinitely readable page turners.
