Call me crazy, but the only categories i see The Weinstein’s Oscar hopefull being competitive in is Best Adapted Screenplay & Best Score. All other categories have their favorites locked.
And even with those two categories, i believe The Imitation Game will pull an American Hustle and go home empty handed.

It looks pretty strong in Adapted, what else do you think will win? I’d love to see Whiplash take it, but it doesn’t seem like it will.

Whiplash for sure. I don’t see a situation where Whiplash loses Adapted Screenplay. Not after the shocking category switch. The film has support and passion. And even a surprise win from Anthony McCarten for The Theory of Everything.

Its best shot is certainly with Screenplay, but far from a foregone conclusion.  It is competing against 3 other Picture nominees so it wouldn’t surprise me at all if it walked away from the entire ceremony empty-handed.

I think The Imitation Game stands a chance at best score.  Desplat is super overdue, and the score to the movie was great.  I do think The Theory of Everything is the frontrunner for that category, though.  Plus, Desplat will likely split votes with himself since he’s double nominated.  But never say never.

I thought The Imitation Game was the frontrunner for Adapted Screenplay until Whiplash came along…

I think that The Imitation Game being the only Best Director nominee of the 4 (the Haneke-Zeitlin era is over, we’re back to Stephen Daldry-for-The-Reader-type nominations lol), as well as having the highest total of nominations in the category puts it in the lead. I don’t see a stealth candidate here. IG has the edge over TofE in the same way that Redmayne has an edge over Cumberbatch. And the controversy of Whiplash’s category placement might dissaude some people from voting for it.

I think now that the Grand Budapest score is nominated, it can win. It’s a showier score than Imitation Game’s, with its range of ethnic instruments – Life of Pi, Slumdog Millionaire and Frida were similar in this regard. I don’t think it matters that it wasn’t nominated at the Globes or Critics Choice. Also, the composers’ names don’t appear on the ballot, so Desplat splitting votes with himself isn’t an issue. Most Academy members won’t care whether he’s overdue or not, just like Thomas Newman or Roger Deakins.

“The Imitation Game” being shut-out completely would make this one of the best Oscar telecasts ever in history. F! that movie.

I have it winning score and that’s it. I don’t think it’s gonna go empty handed. And I have a feeling Whiplash will win AS. And Desplat is winning this catagory with either Budapest or IG it’s his year period.

Don’t think it has a chance at score and the other categories, but Adapted Screenplay has Imitation Game written all over it. It’s the strongest Picture contender in that race and really the only reasonable place to reward the film. Whiplash obviously has a better script (so does Inherent Vice for that matter) but Whiplash is already winning a major category, so I doubt it’ll get screenplay too. EddyQ’s right, look at director. Both films have unknown directors. The fact that Tyldum got in over the obviously more deserving Chazelle just shows that the Academy cares more for the former’s film.

I hope so. The film is Oscar bait trash and deserves zero wins, let alone the nominations in the first place.

I was going to say that I have The Imitation Game winning picture and actor, but that is irrelevant because there is no way that it loses screenplay even if it does not take off in other categories.

Its best chance is obviously in Adapted Screenplay and its chances are looking great in that category.
