Looking at various websites that predict the Oscars ahead of time, I see that in the categories such as Makeup, Costume Design and Production Design, The Lone Ranger is in the Top Ten. This is really shocking to me, considering how huge of a flop the movie was. I never saw it of course, but I am tempted to just because it sucked so much according to a lot of people, except for Quentin Tarantino. But it really got me thinking, if the stars align in the correct way, and if everything works out well, could a movie that bombed as massively as The Lone Ranger still at the end of the day get some Oscar love?

I shudder just thinking about that film.

Well, imo, the screenplay really lets the film down. But, I’ve seen worse. The cinematography was good imo, with some of its scenic shots.
I’m really picking at straws but, the tech aspects of the film vs the direction, screenplay, and perfs may be difficult to seperate from the overall ‘aspects’ but still, plenty of films can do this to a viewer. Let me think of some examples….Cowboys vs Aliens; John Carter, Prometheus; Pacific Rim; Transformers….etc…although, I’m not saying Lone Ranger is up to these other films.

I think Pacific Rim doesn’t deserve to be in a category with those other films, it’s actually a film with good writing, characters, narrative and effects as well.

Agreed. I even ate popcorn during Pacific Rim.  And, I’m not embarassed at all to say that I enjoyed John Carter and Cowboys Vs Aliens. Lol. Point made though I think. If Lone Ranger is mentioned somewhere with Oscar, I’d be rather happy about it. Not the nom so much, but the open mindedness of the Academy. Stunt crews included.

I thought that script was problem here and even though i didn’t like the movie i think that cinemathography was very good and i wouldn’t mind if it is nominated. I also wouldn’t mind if screenplay is nominated for Razzie either.

One of my favorite nominations. Crap movie, but the make up is actually excellent. Separate the technical achievement from the actual story (as in, I don’t think the make up artists should be “punished” because they actually tried hard while everyone else involved in the movie didn’t). I wish the academy made more decisions like this. I’m tired of these Oscar bait films get undeserved technical awards because the writing and acting are good.
