Remember the rumor about Marisa Tomei, that she won her 1993 best supporting actress Oscar only because presenter Jack Palance called the wrong name?
Well thanks to the Moonlight / La La Land mix-up we can say that the myth is officially over.
I think so –
But why was it the producer of La La Land and not the PWC people whom made the correction? According to many sources they remained silent backstage and refused to open the envelope until instructed. Perhaps in 1992 they were also too embarrassed to admit a fault ?

Because Jordan Horowitz was really on top of it and wanted to justly rectify the situation quickly. The accountants were in the background talking probably trying to get Ryan Gosling’s autograph, those starstruck megalomaniacs. They don’t need to make the announcement, nobody wants to hear from them. If anything, I’d think it’d go back to Beatty/Dunaway to re-announce seeing as they’re the presenters. Or even the host if need be. Not Martha and wannabe Jason Bourne.
And I’m tired of the Marisa Tomei rumor. No they weren’t embarrassed to admit fault back then because there was no error. Jack Palance was looking at and read from the card not the teleprompter so that story doesn’t even make sense. Not to mention the resounding applause from the theater which somewhat helps to understand support for her. It’s just a cruel conspiracy that I can’t believe has become so infamous that we still discuss it.
Honestly, all the other performances were boring as hell that year and the only one you’re going to watch again and again is Tomei in My Cousin Vinny. I know it was a strange nomination and an even stranger win because of the film’s genre and caliber but it’s still well deserved. I find Tomei to a very strong actor when given the chance and unlike any of of her competition that year, she’s garnered two followup nominations to further prove she’s not a fluke.
