So Sony Pictures Classics just announced that they picked up an indie film known as The Meddler which will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival this year.

The Meddler is about a widow named Marnie Minervini (Susan Sarandon) who moves from New Jersey to Los Angeles to be closer to her daughter (Rose Byrne). Armed with a bank account full of money and an iPhone, Marnie sets out on a journey to rediscover herself.

What do you guys think? If it gets a positive reception at TIFF, do you think it could be an underdog in the Oscar race? If it is warmly received and if it is amazing, then I know I’ll be crossing my fingers Rose Byrne gets the nod she won’t get for Spy. Depending on the length of her role, that is.

    Let’s discuss!

Yeah, maybe this will be Rose’s ticket to an Oscar nom (although it seems like this is going to be Sarandon’s show on paper).

I miss Sarandon being a contender for the Oscar. She deserves a sixth Best Actress nomination and join the club with Sissy Spacek.

It’s kinda crazy that after Dead Man Walking, where she finally won on her 4th nomination in 5 years, that she’s NEVER been worthy of a nom again.

She turned 50 and the leading lady material was not there.

I disagree that she’s never been worthy of a nomination since 1995. She was fabulous in Twilight (not the vampire movies) and a number of other films Jeff, Who Lives at Home and Igby Goes Down to name two more.

I think this looks promising and it looks like a great leading role for Susan Sarandon. Although its release date on April 22nd doesn’t quite scream Oscar vehicle, it still looks like a good film.

Cecily Strong seems to be showing off her dramatic chops as well.
