Since The Help’s wins/lossess for awards are now recorded in history books, I thought Viola also deserves her own general thread. She had a great ride this year award recognition wise. It could’ve ended even better, but whatever. We love everyobdy. She’s currently filming “Ender’s Game”. Very different, as it is a Sci-Fi. She also has “Won’t Back Down” coming out in the fall. Not sure how big her role is in the film. But, I just hope, sooner than later, she gets a lead role, where she’s in virtually every frame of the movie. You know, the kind where there won’t be any debate as to whether or not she’s committing fraud by being campaigned in the wrong category. Here’s hoping her career flourishes from here on out. She deserves it!

HA! I doubt she’ll get that kind of role, but we’ll support her nonetheless. Have you heard her bespeak of the limited amount of featured lead roles? sad.com

    Minor Davis anecdote –
There is a boutique centrally located but not “A” hotel a block from my house in West Hollywood – the Le Montrose Suites. After the Oscars each year while out dog walking, I asked one of the car valets who stayed there this year.

Usually few or no winners – the big names stay at more glamorous hotels (the Four Seasons being ground zero). To my surprise, I was told Davis stayed here. (Also The Undefeated team and at least one of the Descendants writers).

This suggests that she doesn’t, despite her campaigning hard, want to get a lot of publicity and mingle with the big names and otherwise get noticed. With her status this year and of couse Dreamworks/Disney’s clout, she could have stayed wherever she wanted.

Sean Penn stayed here three years ago when he won, which was a clear sign he wanted a low profile situation.

The other possibility is that she had an entourage and she wanted to stay with them (her manager apparently also was here), and it was impossible for all of them to accomodated elsewhere.

The car valet when I asked him actually said “someone named Viola was here” – didn’t even know her last name. That wouldn’t have happened at one of the top hotels.

The word entourage always scares me when it comes to celebrities.
Viola…you dont need an entourage..Just my opinion.
People that have entourages are usually insecure, unintelligent
and somewhat misguided people…its usually a sideshow.
I would hope that Viola Davis does not fit that profile.

I opt for the theory that she wanted to maintain a low-profile.

If she had won the oscar…she would have had more flashbulbs in her face
    than even Streep…

Entourage in this case, if it is the reason she chose a more available hotel, in her case might mean mainly friends and family, not handlers

I like Viola Davis and hope she wins an Oscar someday, but there is no way in hell I’m going to see “Ender’s Game” which is based on the book by repulsive homophobe Orson Scott Card. A truly vile man.

I think alot of people are missing the big picture with Viola Davis. I keep hearing “this was her one chance because no black actress has been nominated for more then 2 oscars”. To that i say “so what”. Precedants can always be set. Everyone now knows her name and they now know how great of an actress she is. That in turn will give her more oppportunities, she isnt halle berry. So she wont make the mistake of starring in a movie like “catwoman” and destroy her career. Her future to me atleast looks soo much more bright. Plus ive heard some of the producers of The Help are working on other projects surrounding the stars of the film. An if she gets nominated again which i think she will i definately think she’ll win if not for anything else but for the narrative that was written with this oscar loss. Unfortunately for minorities especially sometimes you have to lose to win.

I hope soon she jumps on the bandwagon, and gets do, like so many of the great oscar-nominated/winning actresses, made for television movies, too.

Anyone else catch Viola on Broadway in Fences? Denzel was trying a bit too hard but Davis was spellbinding.

Davis a beautiful person inside and out and a talented actress. She will continue to have a successful career.

I wanted her to win for DOUBT. She was mesmerizing in her 10 minutes of screentime. I watched THE HELP this summer and have to admit, when I watched it, I didnt walk out think “wow, that was an Oscar worthy performance”. It was just missing something to make it a standout. Same thing with Annette Bening’s performance last year and Streep’s in J&J. There was just something missing or a feeling of half baked. They were all great, but to win Oscar there seems to be a need for that preverbial “Oscar moment” scene.

Davis will win an Oscar soon. Hopefully not for FENCES. Loved the show but it will not translate well into film.

Unfortunately, I have not seen it. But, I keep hear nothing but raves about her performance in it.

Has anyone heard anything about “Won’t Back Down”?

I remember reading somewhere that Davis herself considers it her first real lead. Or am I mixing it up with something else?
