We must live in two different worlds because unfactual statements does derail the substance of your message. Doesnt matter what the intent of message is if it ends up being an inaccurate statement, which Banks apologized for.

Looking at this cast gives me a hard on. It’s not going to be exciting seeing Streep nominated again, but good God how long do we have to wait until Hanks is nominated again? I always forget it’s been so long.

What’s even the point of calling out Spielberg as he’s working with Meryl Streep? And has done The Color Purple and also wasn’t The BFG about a little girl? Meanwhile, directors like the Coen brothers and Paul Thomas Anderson have never had a female lead. I mean many would hardly count borderline McDormand in Fargo, but even so, okay that’s one. I know female driven films can be an issue, but regardless, there are plenty of directors who almost exclusively write for and direct women.

So instead of tearing down a legendary director who has contributed so much to cinema, why not just celebrate those who work with women more? Todd Haynes, Pedro Almodovar, Paul Feig, Lars von Trier, Woody Allen, Mike Leigh, Joe Wright, even David Fincher, Xavier Dolan, and the Dardenne brothers. That’d be a much more constructive conversation. Or where’s the support for Sofia Coppola, Jane Campion, Dee Rees, Andrea Arnold, Kelly Reichardt? I love Elizabeth Banks, but she takes the reigns from the male director of the first Pitch Perfect to direct the sequel and now that’s doing more for women in film than Spielberg has ever done?

When Hanks is actually deserving of one. Excluding Captain Phillips, he truly hasn’t been deserving of a nomination for more than a decade. Maybe he’ll be great again for this.

I don’t think there’s any disagreement that Spielberg signed on to The Papers due to Trump, not to work with Streep. Regardless, I think it’s important to recognize that his films primarily prop up straight white men as moral authority figures in a way that’s greatly defined our culture – a fact made no more apparent by the complete willingness to put Spielberg on a pedestal while throwing Banks under the bus.

I think it would send a great message and promote diversity and peace if Spielberg chose to be the bigger man and forgave Banks for her error while acknowledging the validity of her point. It seems like he’s already branching out anyways, and it would be a powerful way to help mend a rift that he has admittedly played a large role in – intentional or not.

I wonder if you read my previous two comments about diverting and distracting from the core issue when you wrote the rest of your post? I am neither excusing the Coens or dismissing Haynes. I’m talking about Spielberg’s films on a forum about Spielberg’s film.

When did Spielberg ever say he’s working on The Papers because of Trump?

I honestly cannot tell weather you are trolling or not. A direct quote from Spielberg is not needed to recognize the impetus of this project – the story, when the deal was made, how they fast-tracked it so quickly, etc.

I asked a simple question of if Spielberg ever said he’s doing it because of Trump and u give me 0 evidence and all assumptions.

Actually I gave you three pieces of evidence to make one solid assumption. If this is how it’s gonna be, to the ignore button I go.

This wasn’t about you but Banks. If she really wants to talk about directors without any female-centric films then she should start with many others before Spielberg.

Sure, but as I’ve been getting at this whole time the subtext of her choosing Spielberg is because of his enormous cultural impact and how that effects representation in Hollywood throughout. Point being, he’s not an unfair target, she just should have done her research first.

I’d just like to say that if this film is actually going to be called “The Papers” I’m not watching it. I expect a better title from Spielberg.

Banks was not the first actress to call out Spielberg, Binoche did the same at Cannes last year – and both have a reason to do it so.

Regardless of the roles, Paulson is playing Hanks’ secretary.

About awards: aside from the leads, it’s Tracy Letts who has a really big monologue about Streep having to calm down when she’s facing censorship from the president, so I guess he will be the supporting player from this movie. Paulson has something like that with Hanks, so I can see her receiving a nom for this if the movie is great, and it will be awesome!

But if the content overall is great, why should the title matter? I mean, it’s not that bad if you really think about it.
