After it won the Golden Globe?

Is there a story related to that? Some technicality or did it just not get enough votes?

It turned out that the song was not written for the movie.

There’s a thread for this on the Grammy forum. The Academy asked the singer about it to confirm elegibility and she said it wasn’t written for the movie. It was disqualified.

By the way, several songs have won the Globe and then get snubbed by The Oscars despite qualifying. Including songs by U2, Madonna, Cher, Bruce Springsteen and other big names.

Because they weren’t written for the motion picture, i.e. “This Used To Be My Playground”?

Yeah, I wrote about this when I was going over all of the Best Original Song Oscar nominees last year. If only Amanda McBroom had told a little white lie…

I was refering to Globe winning songs. That one didn’t win. However my song in the comment was Masterpiece, which did win the Globe. It was not eligible though as it was the second song played in the credits and that’s against the rules.

That’s surprising. The song fit the movie so perfectly. The part about the night being too lonely and the road too long is stuff the character of The Rose is always saying. Maybe she added that line and then the end which is the stuff about beneath the bitter snow is the seed that in the sun becomes…..The Rose.

    Andrew,

I just read your article. Very interesting. Do you know how McBroom came to be questioned by the academy about the song? Were they investigating it or did she just blurt that out at some Academy event?

I think only a few years later Stevie Wonder won for an old song.
