Finally got around to watching this movie after recording it numerous times and deleting it due to space considerations. I thought the film was good, but nothing special. I seem to recall there being some outrage that lillian gish was not nominated for best actress.  i have not seen sally kirkland’s nominated performance, but I would rank each of the other four nominees ahead of miss gish. I would love to hear some other opinions about this film and mish gish’s non-nomiantion.

I feel that she should have been at least nominated. She had been in the industry for about 75 years at that point. She was 93. Prior to this film, she received just one major nomination (Supp Actress – 1946’s Duel in the Sun) before winning an Honorary Oscar in 1971. She was the oldest actress to be featured in a Lead Role. She would have become the oldest competitive nominee to date, a record which would still hold had she been nominated.

This is a very sweet, gentle film. It doesn’t have explosions, giant flying robots or alien mutants. The 1980s film industry made a handful of films about geriatrics living life, and this is one of them. The others were On Golden Pond, Cocoon, The Trip to Bountiful and Driving Miss Daisy. If Geraldine Page and Jessica Tandy can win, then Miss Gish could certainly have earned a nomination…

I love Gish in this but she had the misfortune of contending in a truly boffo year for leading ladies. Beyond she and the Oscar nominees, there was Dunaway in Barfly, Streisand in Nuts, Farrow in September, Smith in The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne and Huston in The Dead. Streep actually wasn’t really on-the-radar at all.

Gish’s Oscar-nominated co-star Ann Sothern, on the other hand, did nothing in the picture but benefited enormously from a super-anemic Supporting Actress field.

Shame they didn’t nominate Vanessa Redgrave’s wonderfully witty performance in Prick Up Your Ears, then! Still, Olympia Dukakis and Anne Archer were highly deserving nominees at least. I’ve heard Anne Ramsey’s great fun too, but I haven’t seen her film.

Redgrave was fantastic, as were Elaine Stritch in November, Carroll Baker in Ironweed and Veronica Cartwright in The Witches of Eastwick. Frankly, of the Oscar nominees, I’m only fond of Dukakis. Ramsey’s funny but she could do that schtick in her sleep.

Thanks for all of the replies. You all gave me something to think about. I did not realize Mish Gish was 93 years old. Hard to believe that did not propel her to a nomination. However, as I said I would have nominated Cher, Close, Hunter, and Streep ahead of Miss Gish, and I would add Barbra Streisand as the fifth nominee.

I have not seen the other performances Andrew Carden mentioned, but would love to know who his 5 nominees would be.

I also agree that Ann Sothern did nothing special with her role. I guess she got the career nomination Iinstead of Miss Gish that year.
