I am aware that I might get pushback for saying this but I was deeply offended and upset by the trailer for this movie and I will try to explain why in my post. This movie is about a mother who is grieving due to the death of her daughter through violence. The trailer is extremely violent and it is she and her friends who are perpetrating the violence. The scene in which she physically attacks two bratty children is deeply offensive and this woman should go to jail for her assault of minors. I get that viewers get a “kick” out of violence but as someone who wishes for a non-violent society I just don’t enjoy gratuitous or condoned violence. When the violence is shown but it is condemned it’s different. I found myself disliking Frances McDormand’s character intensely while watching the trailer – shaking my head “NO” vigorously throughout it. Now I try every year to see all of the major nominees for Oscars (last year I saw all the nominees in the top six categories and 9 out of 10 of the screenplay nominees, the exception being The Lobster) and so now I am in a quandary since I do think McDormand will be nominated and it likely be nominated for it’s screenplay as well – but I really don’t want to see this movie. I have a feeling I won’t like it at all. I am trying to think of times when I have disliked the trailer only to enjoy the movie – nothing is coming to mind quickly.

    You’re such an embarrassment.

Spectacular film. Mark my words: Frances McDormand is winning lead actress. It’s undeniable. It will be undeniable. It is just one of those performances. Sasha, I know you’re rooting for Sally, who I am not seeing till Thursday, but McDormand gives such a beautiful towering performance that not only am I confident she’ll win, but I am confident that you will root for her once you see her. To put it in perspective: think MEW’s performance in Fargo but even crazier.

I could imagine a scenario where this wins for McDormand, Rockwell, Score, screenplay, and possibly even picture. The movie in general actually does remind me a lot of Fargo (the movie), which is sort of perfect.

The screenplay was fantastic. I’m lost trying to decide if I liked this more than Ladybird.

This movie is so funny and so fucked up but so beautiful. Also, I’m surprised nobody is predicting Woody Harrelson. His role is small but it’s total bait.

Also, I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a movie in which the screenplay so perfectly understands the complexity of morals. It was fantastic and the characters were so fucking rich. This was the role of a lifetime for McDormand. She would have blown Stone out of the water last year.

Saw it tonight. Really enjoyed it. McDormand and Rockwell would be totally deserving winners. I don’t know if this will sweep some major categories like people think it will, I think the ending will be a turn off for some people (I really liked it though).

Nah. Not gonna happen. When it comes to stanning I am as stupid as the rest of you. Even if I find some performance better than the one I am rooting for I start consider things like: if the person with better performance already has an Oscar. If he or she has then it’s a dealbreaker for me. Frances already has one so I don’t want to see her winning another one. So I am gonna root for Sally no matter what. And next year I’m going to have such a hard time with rooting for either Saoirse or Glenn. And if by some miracle Rampling gets traction for Hannah, well… sorry Glenn and Saoirse.

Oh, and if I see Frances as a threat to Sally then I’m gonna shit on her too as I already started on Margot. Yeah I’m that kind of nasty bitch.

Darling I am the most self aware person here. You ain’t getting any shit from me. If anyone’s interested here’s my “who I want to win a golden dildo the most”:

Charlotte Rampling/Imelda Staunton (if it ever happens that those two will be competing against each other I’m gonna kill myself) > Sally Hawkins > Sigourney Weaver > Isabelle Huppert > Kate Beckinsale > Glenn Close > Michelle Pfeiffer

Cammy D. is retired but if she ever decides to return to acting then she’s between Izzy and Katie. And you know she’s like my favorite living actress evah but there are still other actresses who I want to see with golden dildo more than her.

You don’t believe in multiple Oscar wins for acting?

Nah. Never. Why someone needs so many awards? One is enough. Spread the love. You won one golden dildo, we know you’re great. Next person please. Giving so many awards to one person is just pointless. Unless you’re a fucking egomaniac.

Someone is invested in the precursor narrative for this.

Yeaaahhh… NO. First of all, just to remind you, McDormand’s “role of a lifetime” is now and always will be her towering performance in Olive Kitteridge, for which she earned an Emmy.

Second of all, while it is perfectly fine to stan, you saying McDormand could have beaten Stone last year reminds me of a certain troll/stan/nutjob insisting that Dunkirk is a lock to win Screenplay. You know you I’m referring to. I still think Sally Hawkins is safe to win for now, even though I’m totally convinced the pathetic Stone-haters on Goldderby want to desperately convince themselves that Battle of the Sexes disappointed harder than it actually did. So what if it didn’t do great at the box office? It still was at least admired if not acclaimed by those who saw it that don’t have an insane grudge against Emma Stone. 😐

Keep in mind that the Oscars didn’t even nominate Seven Psychopaths for anything, from the same writer and director as 3 Billboards. From all the hype, McDormand is a safe bet for a nomination, and maybe even Rockwell, but don’t get carried away. I LOVED Baby Driver, but I don’t have it predicted in any major categories in spite of all the critical acclaim, because I know it isn’t the kind of movie the Oscars go for. I will keep insisting that Get Out is as secure a lock as you can find this year to win at least Picture, Director, and Original Screenplay, but I have TONS of reasons (cutural relevance, social commentary, excellent performances, cinematography, and music, emotional effectiveness, a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes besides the notorious right-wing contrarian Armond White and another positive-leaning review 3/5 that still somehow got stupidly counted as negative) for arguing that besides the simple stupid reason “I like it, therefore all other awards must like it too.” 😉

The children thoroughly deserve kicking. In my screening the audience cheered.
