Early notices suggest career-best work by Glenn Close in The Wife – will a distributor bite for 2017?

OSCAR FLASHBACK: Nicholson at the Oscars (1981) – Reds

If the film gets distribution and is released in 2017 (although it might be wise to wait for 2018) I can see two scenarios playing out: Close is snubbed by the Academy for whatever reason (film isn’t good as the first review suggests and/or film doesn’t pick up steam at box office or precursors) or Close is nominated and wins. Because I cannot imagine a situation in which Glenn Close, who is currently 0/6 with the Academy, is nominated for what is being called a career-best performance and loses on her 7th nomination. The Academy is not that cruel.

Or, Close is nominated and loses yet again, making it all the likelier she later prevails for Sunset Boulevard.

Does Close have a lead or supporting role in the film?

    She’ll campaign lead.

She plays The Wife if that helps. 🙂

Wonder can Daniel Craig make a splash with “Kings?” His role sounds juicy.

3 Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri wins the People’s Choice! Runners up are I, Tonya and Call Me By Your Name. Seems like McDormand and her film are serious contenders.

People have been underestimating Frances McDormand but I think she’s just as likely to get in as Sally Hawkins.

The performance she gave in the trailer was enough to consider her top five. Plus Searchlight is her distributor.

The TIFF results don’t help much except to put Three Billboards squarely in the Best Picture category, like with Room two years ago. Not sure about I, Tonya though, they’ve had random runners-up before. Call Me by Your Name managing a 3rd place finish is sort of reassuring that the film plays beyond the art-house crowd. The Shape of Water not winning anything is disappointing but I wouldn’t look too much into it, as neither did Gravity when Prisoners won second runner-up. I expect the results this year were very close.

Another rave for Emma Thompson, hoping she’ll come through next year!
