what do you think was a super close race ? in terms of everyone was equally deserving and had you gotten to vote it would have been difficult to pick just one .

I came to the 2006 Best Actress Category … I think all five were amazing and would have struggled to pick just won… FIVE WAY tie IMO

Helen Mirren – The Queen as Queen Elizabeth IIdouble-dagger
Penélope Cruz – Volver as Raimunda
Judi Dench – Notes on a Scandal as Barbara Covett
Meryl Streep – The Devil Wears Prada as Miranda Priestly
Kate Winslet – Little Children as Sarah Pierce

Well, the REAL Best Actress 2006 category was anything but a super close race.
I’d really given Meryl the prize that year easily, because it might be her second best performance of all time, but she had no chance. Sadly…
I don’t dislike Mirren’s win, though. It’s the perfect definition of sweep.

I think Best Actress in 1973 would have been one of the closest ever. Glenda Jackson won for A Touch of Class over: Barbra Streisand in The Way We Were, Joanne Woodward in Summer Wishes Winter Dreams, Ellen Burstyn in The Exorcist, and Marsha Mason in Cinderella Liberty. That, in my opinion, is the best Best Actress lineup ever. That had to be so close! I would have chosen Marsha Mason.

Obviously the 2000 best supporting actress race. All of them won one precursor each.

    Harden-Oscar

    Hudson-GG

    McDormand-CC

    Walters-BAFTA

    Dench-SAG

The race that ended up with Tilda Swinton winning was probably as close as this one

yes that is definitely the most recent tight race, I forgot who won CC that year, I assume it’s Ryan since I remember Ronan walked away with nothing the whole race.

i know it wasn’t actually a close race … i was referring to how i judged all their performances …. alot of the time i feel one or two arent as good as the others … in this case i think all five are prefect.

Lawrence vs. Nyong’o had to be super close.

Close maybe, but not that close. There are individual reasons why Lawrence won GG and BAFTA that might not have impacted the Oscar race as much as one might think. I was nervous at the time, but looking back it’s clear Nyong’o was the frontrunner all along.

Laura Dern was 20 times better than these nominees with Inland Empire. Streep should have won supporting actress.

Tightest race? 1951 for best actress.

    Assuming you mean the year Judy Holliday won, I would say you were wrong; Holiday won that in a landslide. It was very obvious that she was going to win by default as Swanson and Davis were playing variations on the same character, and Davis and Baxter were in the same film, leaving Parker and Holliday out of the vote-splitting. Holliday even won two Golden Globes for Born Yesterday, Drama and Comedy Actress, and while they weren’t considered precursors back then, it was a sure sign that Holliday had it in the bag. I would say that these were the final results;
    1. Judy Holliday (Born Yesterday)
    2. Gloria Swanson (Sunset Boulevard)
    3. Anne Baxter (All About Eve)
    4. Bette Davis (All About Eve)
    5. Eleanor Parker (Caged)

If you were talking about the year that Leigh won, forget it. That was also a landslide.

    Mickey Rourke vs. Sean Penn

A tale of the two Hollywood bad boys. One was an Oscar darling, the other, well…

Many thought this race was Rourke’s to lose, but Penn’s film was a Best Picture contender that kept gaining momentum through the season, whereas The Wrestler came up short Oscar nominations morning.

If I remember correctly, people were comparing the Affleck vs Denzel race to this race. The major difference being that Penn was in a major frontrunner and had actually won at least several precursor awards but still not that many compared to Rourke’s several dozen while Affleck was in a major frontrunner and had taken 40+ awards while Denzel was a non-factor. Pretty interesting side note.
