I feel that Tilda Swinton is like the Anti-Meryl Streep. I don’t mean it in a way that she is terrible. In fact, I think she is the best actress working today. What I mean is that she consistently gives masterful and awards-worthy performances, yet never enjoys the level of recognition that Meryl Streep always gets when she has a movie out. Ever since her win for Michael Clayton, she’s been robbed of a nod/win for Julia as well as nods for We Need To Talk About Kevin and Snowpiercer and she deserves another nod for Trainwreck. Not to mention, she last year, she played a centuries-old vampire in Only Lovers Left Alive and stole her small cameo as the elderly Madame D. in The Grand Budapest Hotel.
What do you guys think? Do you feel she is the anti-Meryl like I do? Let’s discuss.
(*Note: This isn’t meant to be a dig against Meryl. She is one of our best.)August 22, 2015 at 8:09 am #192645
CHANGE the Title ….. Somewhat like ….. Tilda is ….. ANTICHRIST !!!August 22, 2015 at 8:16 am #192646
I love Tilda Swinton. LOVE her. And she totally disappears into her roles. Of any actress working today, you put up pictures of the characters they have played and Swinton’s are all completely different. She is a true chameleon.August 22, 2015 at 8:33 am #192647
It’s easy to become an anti-Streep—just have feeling in your work.August 22, 2015 at 8:51 am #192648
I love Tilda. She is my favourite actress. I just wish she was in more films and getting more leads. Streep – I cannot abide, but I’m starting to become annoyed with Blanchett as well. I wish Swinton would get the roles Blanchett is getting cast in now, she’s much the better actress.August 22, 2015 at 8:54 am #192649
Tilda Swinton is one of the most brilliant actresses ever, and my personal favorite actress of all time. Not only can she completely disappear into any role, she is also someone with a terrific sense of humor and you can never feel the acting like you can with Meryl.August 22, 2015 at 5:03 pm #192650
I wouldn’t say she is the anti Meryl. Tilda and Meryl both are talented in disappearing into roles and creating great characters out of wacky hair pieces and make up. Plus both do every genre they can get their hands on. Tilda hasn’t done a musical and Meryl hasn’t done sci fi so they have a few differences but they are on the same caliber to me. Yeah it is a shame Tilda gets the short end of the stick in awards attention but Meryl also has 40 years under her belt. Tilda rose to fame maybe less than 20August 22, 2015 at 5:12 pm #192651
Tilda doesn’t really play the awards game though. When she won the BAFTA and the Oscar she kind of acted like she didn’t want them. (the whole I’ll give this to my agent stuff.) I remember backlash on that and people being offended. I always thought that hurt her chances for “….Kevin” a few years later. I remember her being on the border that year and fighting for 5th or 6th place. A few lost votes must have made the difference.August 22, 2015 at 5:21 pm #192652
Meryl and Oscar are married. Tilda is too busy being Tilda to care.August 22, 2015 at 5:46 pm #192653
I think Tilda cares. After the snub for Kevin she has made herself more visable in recent years.August 22, 2015 at 5:52 pm #192654
I love love love Tilda Swinton. Every bit as chameleonic as Meryl but I agree she doesn’t get as much credit for it. That’s mostly because the movies Tilda does rarely fall in lines with inoffensive awards fare — even “We Need to Talk About Kevin” would have been unusually dark for academy tastes, even though she came thisclose to a nomination. And weird indie genre stuff like “Only Lovers,” “Snowpiercer” — that stuff was never getting in, alas.
But I love Tilda and Meryl, so more than anything, I’d love to see them put their contrasting styles to use together, star in a movie as sisters, lovers, friends — I feel like the dramatic (or comedic) tension would be great given how different their roles usually are.
Given the depth of her talent, though, I wish Meryl would be as ambitious as Tilda. For every conventional studio film or prestige awards project she does, why doesn’t she get funky with the occasional offbeat vampire movie or the weird almost-unrecognizable supporting role or cameo. She’ss certainly capable of it.August 22, 2015 at 6:18 pm #192655

This. I agreed with much said, both among the greatness and both almost opposites, but at the end is just about this.

Both are brilliant, there is no need to bash neither of them. Meryl is a bit forced in the last few years, but those who feel that she’s not good or ambitious enough should check out her whole career (I understand that people dislike her in “Into the Woods” “August: Osage County” and “Doubt”….but that’s only three films in her entire career…), performances such as “Cry in the Dark” “Sophie’s Choice” or “The Bridges of Madison County” and so on.August 23, 2015 at 12:56 am #192657

Isn’t The Giver a Sci Fi ???
For info ….. Tilda & Meryl both appeared in Adaptation with the former as Studio Boss optioning The Orchid Thief book of Susan Orlean.
Pound Per Pound ….. Is Tilda Swinton BETTER THAN Cate Blanchett ???August 23, 2015 at 1:06 am #192658
