Nice to see Woody put himself back on-screen. Looks like another solid outing for him (though I can already tell the Eisenberg/Page story will be my least favorite).

    I adore that:
A – Woody “does” another city – Rome deserves it as much, if not more, than London and Barcelona
B – Woody directs himself again
C – Judy Davis is in the cast (there’s hope for Diane Keaton and Dianne Wiest)!
D – Roberto Benigni has a chance to prove that he can be more than one-hit wonder (at least internationally)
E – Penelope Cruz works with Allen yet again and (IMO) resembles the spirit of Sophia Loren from “Marriage Italian-Style”

I, for one, think that Ellen Page and Jesse Eisenberg are great catches for Allen and can work together brilliantly.

I was slightly disappointed by “Midnight in Paris” but the film was critical and commercial success for my favorite director so I’m all for that and this Rome project has a great potential to continue his good fortune.

Oscar winners in the cast: Woody Allen (he won for Directing and Writing and was nominated for Acting), Roberto Benigni, Penelope Cruz. Oscar nominees in the cast: Alec Baldwin, Judy Davis, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page. Not bad.

This opens in Italy next week, Brazil on June 1, but not in the US until June 22.

Brazil was a big market for Midnight in Paris, made a huge success here. I can’t wait to see.

This doesn’t mean that the movie will be good. Look at Nine. Everyone had an oscar but the film wasn’t that great.

I hope the film is good. I love Woody Allen and the trailer looks great.

Also, Penelope Cruz speaks very well italian. I’m italian and I thought she was one as well by the way she speaks.

I know but the level of anticipation is much, much lower and it’s really hard to compare Allen and Marshall at working with actors.

    BASTA!

So, what is the Italian word for cliché?

BTW, how old is Ellen Page? And what’s up with that “men adore her” blah blah blah dialog? Allen is writing about her character as if she were Kim Cattrall as “Samantha” on SEX IN THE CITY!

Glad to see Judy Davis, anyway…

She’s 25. Her character seems to be bold, funny and not in the mood for any serious relationships, which may be enough for men to adore her, TBH.  Her girl-on-girl revelation and overall aura (at least based on what we saw) connects her a bit with Scarlett Johansson’s Cristina from “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”.

Another passionate love letter to ANOTHER city…
    But I love it though!
It usually turns out to be good and not over emphasize the PASSION OF THE CITY.

This is now playing in Italy (dubbed in Italian, as is the norm there for all films).

The significant thing isn’t that it is opening there first per se (not until June in the US), but that it has been allowed to open without screening for the US trades, which normally films of this caliber and importance are. (For example, Battleship, which is already a big hit elsewhere, was reviewed by LA-based Variety and HRep critics before it opened overseas).

We won’t know for sure until the reviews appear, but in normal tea-leafing reading this would indicate real worries that the reviews aren’t going to be all that good.

That said, it wouldn’t be surprising based on the good will created by Mid in Paris that this ends up doing better than all other recent Allen films in many years (MiP ended up as the 8th best of his films, ticket price adjusted).

Apparently the early reaction was somewhat hostile in Italy from the press:

That’s a shame. Cast is great and Woody certainly knows how to create a “postcard for the city”. Maybe expectations were too high after “…Paris”.
