It’s been nearly 30 years … and now it occurs to some filmmaker to adapt the Tony-winning Fences to the big screen.

No wonder the movies, with what material gets produced, are now inferior to television.

It would be awesome if Viola Davis won Oscar for this. If the film really comes out this year, she will be up against Meryl Streep again Next year’s lineup will be full of overdue actresses like Adams, Chastain and Davis. Larson is so lucky that she doesn’t encounter anyone of them this year.

Yes! Hopefully this is the film that gets Viola her Oscar!

While I’m not a fan of Davis’ previous two Oscar nominations, I do respect and like her as an actress, and hopefully this is going to be her ticket to win an Oscar. She’s talented so I support her no matter what. During that, let’s win another Emmy, Miss Davis!

I agree. She is an outstanding actress and Id like to see her and Denzel together.

Viola Davis will be strong contender.

More interesting will be what happens with Denzel Washington. The role of failed baseball player Troy Maxson in Fences is a truly great one.

Is it possible that Denzel will earn a third Oscar?

Viola should be able to build a hell of a narrative with this. As long as the quality of the film is there, she could very likely find herself up on that stage. And she deserves to be.

The thing is that I don’t trust Denzel behind the camera.
Other than that, Viola could very well for this but it depends on the competition whether she will go lead or supporting. She went lead at the Tonys mostly due to the lack of competition and everybody was pointing out she’s borderline supporting.

I do. Denzel first directed Viola Davis in Antwone Fisher. She played the mother who gave up Fisher for adoption. When Fisher finally finds his biological mother, she will not speak. Davis is a relevation. That was 16 years ago and yet that scene haunts me. Here is a YouTube link for part of the film’s sequence.

Excellent point. At the Tonys for the first Broadway production of Fences in 1987, Mary Alice won the prize for Best Supporting Actress in a Play for the role of Rose Maxson.

Viola Davis won the 2010 prize for Best Actress in a Play for playing Rose Maxon in the Broadway revival.

With current issues of category fraud unlikely to go away, this will most likely be a debate during awards season.

Exciting news! As long as all schedules permit, they will starting shooting this soon to get out by end of year. Admittedly, i’ve never seen the play. But, im quite excited to see the film adaptation! Especially starring these greats!!

I’ve read the play before and seen it performed. Troy & Rose Maxson are both Oscar-winning roles in the right hands. Watch out for both in our post-#OscarsSoWhite world.
