I was looking through the forum threads for things about film composers, and haven’t really found anything except for a 2011 forum discussion about composers, but mainly those known for Broadway, like Stephen Sondheim. So I thought, as a follow up to my forum topics about film songs, I thought I should do something similar about film scores, namely their composers. There are my personal ten favorites:

    1. John Williams
    2. Alexandre Desplat
    3. Hans Zimmer
    4. Alan Menken
    5. Howard Shore
    6. James Horner
    7. Danny Elfman
    8. James Newton Howard
    9. Michael Giacchino
    10. Mychael Danna

Now, I’d like to know who your top 10 favorite film composers are.

I wouldn’t be able to write a list of composers, but Ennio Morricone is clearly my favourite. I’m particularly attached to his work in Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion, but I adore almost everything he has done.

I probably can’t come up with ten, but my absolute favorites are Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Their work with David Fincher is awesome. There’s no denying Hans Zimmer, Alexandre Deslpat, and John Williams are all incredibly talented. I also like Thomas Newman’s American Beauty, Ennio Morricone’s The Hateful Eight, John Carpenter’s Halloween, and anything from Clint Masnell.

Oh and Jóhann Jóhannsson. So, I guess that’s technically ten?

For me the list begins and ends with Jerry Goldsmith, especially given his versatility:

Wrote by far the greatest score in the history of noir in Chinatown.  It’s simply the best story-telling by a film score, ever.

Wrote three of the greatest sci-fi scores in Planet of the Apes, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Alien.

Wrote two of the greatest horror scores in The Omen and Poltergeist.
