MsMojo just published a video on some of the worst vocal performances in movie musicals…
I’m surprised Tom Cruise made the list given that several people (myself included) were actually impressed by his vocal performance in Rock of Ages. I remember people being more divided on Russell Crowe’s vocal performance in Les Misérables (I didn’t mind his singing as I felt it fit the vision of what that film was going for). I thought Marlon Brando gave an alright vocal performance in Guys & Dolls. I’m surprised Lucille Ball didn’t make the list for Mame given how much that film killed her career. I’m glad Emma Watson made the list because while I haven’t seen the live action remake of Beauty & the Beast, I myself literally cringed when I heard her sing ‘Something There’ in the clip.
What do you think?
Emma Watson shouldn’t have made the list at all. I’ve heard a lot of singing that’s way, WAY worse. And Tom Cruise made me shiver with horror in Rock Of Ages. When he started singing, I thought “This guy is a rock star?! Give me a break!!” Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Stipe, Billy Corgan, David Gilmour…now their voices are true rock star voices.
Russell Crowe (who turns 54 today, by the way) was absolutely horrible in Les Miserables…
Russell Crowe has a band, he’s performed on stage, even in several stage musicals very early in his career. In fact, I highly recommend you check out this video of Crowe performing ‘The Confrontation’ with Hugh Jackman at Joe’s Pub because it is done completely different than it was in the film.
On the bright side, Russell Crowe should feel really lucky that he wasn’t nominated for a Razzie while Pierce Brosnan very deservingly won for his ‘nails on a chalk board’ vocal performance in Mamma Mia!. Though they should both feel lucky that neither of those performances ended up killing their careers like Lucille Ball in Mame.
I’ll take Crowe over Cruise any day.
