First Look: Sony Classics Dates ‘Truth’ in Oscary October Slot

Sony Classics has set an October release date for Truth starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford… big move for a possible Oscar contender and it would seem, a likely Telluride premiere.

This post, First Look: Sony Classics Dates ‘Truth’ in Oscary October Slot, is originally from Rope of Silicon, written by Brad Brevet.

This is a case where I don’t see the writer/director taking the film very far.

They better not push Blanchett into best actress, no one wants another Revolutionary Road.

I don’t see anything happening with this one. It’s The Company You Keep: Part II, just with a better release date.

I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Best case scenario imo? Cate for Lead here and Rooney for Lead there….

Revolutionary Road is brilliant. Better than The Reader imo. Unless that’s what you mean, where a better performance gets snubbed because of another film by the same actress.

Both movies and performances were brilliant and Oscar-worthy imo. I just hate the fact that Revolutionary Road got sort of forgotten because of The Reader.

    First clip from Truth.

It looks like a fine political thriller, but the only award-baity things I see here are Cate (if she’s supporting) and maybe adapted screenplay.

I don’t buy this as an Oscar contender at all.

Truth was so good and Cate Blanchett is even better than she was in Blue Jasmine for which she won an Oscar.

“But Rather is largely a supporting character in Truth, as the film’s focus is on Mapes, played by Blanchett as a whip-smart, shiv-sharp newshound whose pursuit of the truth may have blinded her to more practical fact-checking problems. The movie might have been adapted from Mapes’s 2005 memoir, but Truth doesn’t sanctify or lionize its controversial author: Instead, she’s portrayed here as unapologetically hard-charging — even when she might be charging in the wrong direction — and Blanchett’s performance, one of her best, finds her wielding Mapes’s intelligence as both a weapon and a defense mechanism. Blanchett has already stirred up serious Oscar talk with this year’s forthcoming, universally beloved Carol; her turn in Truth makes a double nomination totally plausible. ”

“Blanchett gives this dynamo of intelligence and doggedness a real human dimension that allows the propulsive drama to breathe; it’s another stellar performance that rates among her best. “

Wow, I was expecting good reviews for Blanchett, but not comparisons to her best role in Blue Jasmine. So happy about that. Maybe double nod for Best Drama Actress at the Golden Globes is possible?

One more opinion from Variety: “Suffering only from a measure of familiarity when set beside the actress’s other work, Blanchett’s performance is forceful yet delicately shaded, and she renders Mapes with admirable complexity”

Word out of Toronto is that Sony Pictures Classic has a big Oscar winner with James Vanderbilt’s Truth. And that the 2015 Toronto Film festival finally delivers the first huge Oscar contender for 2015.

Cate Blanchett is definetly getting a Best Actress nomination for it.

Tim Robbey from the Telegraph gives it a 4/5

‘Cate Blanchett is on the form of her life’

Lou Lumenick from the New York Post gives it a rave review.

“Truth’’ dramatically recounts the story behind the “60 Minutes’’ segment that led Dan Rather (well-played by Robert Redford) to resign from CBS, but the brightest star of this great ensemble piece is Cate Blanchett, who may well end up with another Oscar nomination for playing Rather’s producer Mary Mapes.

Tim gray from Variety gives a rave review.

“One of the great pleasures of awards season is discovering a film that was low on the radar, with little advance hype, but turns out to be an Oscar contender in multiple categories. “Truth” is one of those films, a real gem of the current Toronto Film Festival.

She is getting the Lead Actress nomination for TRUTH. She wants to get it for Truth, hence the request to go Supporting in Carol. And her reviews for this film is above what she got for Carol.

The trailer for Truth has been released. And to the shock of nobody, Blanchett does truly look outstanding in it!
