Steven Spielberg’s casting of The Post show that the quality line between movies and television has blurred immensely. Most of the supporting cast in The Post gained their fame/success primarily from their work on the small screen. Sarah Paulson, Bob Odenkirk, Carrie Coon, Matthew Rhys and so on.
Once upon a time being called a “TV actor” was a dirty word (Brian De Palma told an anecdote in the great documentary about himself called De Palma about Sean Penn whispering the words “TV Actor” to Michael J Fox to rile him up during filming Casualties Of War).
Now some of the finest actors working are doing their best work on TV and being discovered there.Anyway, my picks:
Tatiana MaslanyJanuary 4, 2018 at 12:01 pm #1202455752
After the obvious Laurie Metcalf/Allison Janney win one of them will come back in the next few years in the same category.
Tatiana Maslany needs the right project and she will be here. Same for Claire Foy.January 4, 2018 at 12:08 pm #1202455758
Sarah Paulson all the wayJanuary 4, 2018 at 12:13 pm #1202455764

Krysten Ritter is a bit underrated. She really shines in Jessica Jones, and seeing her in interviews, she’s absolutely nothing like her character.
I think Ritter has a shot if she’s cast in something good.January 4, 2018 at 12:27 pm #1202455772
It’s gonna be older actress who’s mostly known for her comic genius… Megan Mullally I guess?January 4, 2018 at 12:47 pm #1202455806
I would really love for Gillian Anderson to get some good movie roles, she’s more than capable of giving an Oscar worthy performance.January 4, 2018 at 1:07 pm #1202455831
I love the mentions of Moss, Maslany, Ritter, Coon, Mullulay and Dreyfus. I’d add a few more TV actors that are capable of handed the right role: Regina King, Kathryn Hahn, Aden Young, Jon Hamm, Christina Hendricks, Niecey Nash, Danielle Brookes, Bob Odenkirk, Gina Rodriguez, Rachel Brosnahan, Betty Gilpin, Pamela Adlon, Ted Danson, Michaela Coel, Yvonne Orji, J. Cameron Smith, Julia Garner, Bobby Cannavale, Rami Malek, and Sterling K Brown.
Every single one of them at least has the talent to put in a worthy performance.
Specifically I’d be shocked if Regina King, Jon Hamm, and Ted Danson don’t eventually get something.January 4, 2018 at 1:11 pm #1202455832
I would really love for Gillian Anderson to get some good movie roles, she’s more than capable of giving an Oscar worthy performance.
All she needs is to play Blanche DuBois in a Streetcar remake by a capable director and she is winning that Lead Actress trophy easily.
She has If Beale Street Could Talk next year and I think it could help her get an easy Supporting Actress win, just like American Crime did at the Emmys if she has the material.January 4, 2018 at 1:20 pm #1202455844
Claire Foy is starting to get good roles, like Ryan Gosling’s wife in the Neil Armstrong and she’s going to be the next Lisbeth Salander I think. If she’s getting roles like this at this rate I think she’s going to win an Oscar.January 4, 2018 at 1:22 pm #1202455846
Fuck yes to Regina KingJanuary 4, 2018 at 1:35 pm #1202455858
Watch Ann Dowd get nominated before all these people, because why not?
