Variety kicks off its coverage of the Oscars each year with a spotlight on the top contenders, the point basically being to guide Academy members as to which screeners they should be watching.
The specifically say these are the films that stand the best shot at two or more nominations for the top (picture, acting, directing, writing) categories.
They need to balance among distributors, so some companies with multiple films get slighted.
Also some films that seem to be up for one acting nod – Take Shelter, Corolianus, Beginners, The Lady and so on – get slighted.
They also like to find room for a comedy or two, a blockbuster or two, which might explain some of the choices.
Here is the list of films. I’d be curious to see what some of the other overlooked films are:
The Adventures of Tintin
A Dangerous Method
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows – Part 2
The Ides of March
The Iron Lady
Martha Marcy May Marlene
Midnight in Paris
My Week With Marilyn
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
The Tree of Life
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows – Part 2- FTW! hell yeah!
Oh I’m just happy to see Bridesmaids there.
Why isn’t Shame on there or any animated features?
As they stated, these are the films they think are most likely to have 2 or more nominations in top categories.
They are implying that only Fassbender has a chance. They don’t include the animated feature category as a top one.
Also, they try to include as many distributors and Fox Searchlight already has Descendants and Martha Marcy.
