2010: SOMEWHERE, Sofia Coppola (President: Quentin Tarantino)
2009: LEBANON, Samuel Maoz (President: Ang Lee)

2002: THE MAGDALENE SISTERS, Peter Mullan (President: Gong Li)

    2013 PRESIDENT

I see they choose Italian names very often, so why not? I think they could go with a big name to equal Cannes, in sense of BIG filmmaker, like Bernardo Bertolucci or Franco Zeffirelli. Maybe someone like Gus Van Sant or Kathryn Bigelow? Emir Kusturica, Jean Luc Godard, Clint Eastwood…

    2013 MOVIES

A MOST WANTED MAN, Anton Corbijn
    NIGHT MOVES, Kelly Reichardt
    NYNPHOMANIAC, Lars Von Trier
TWELVE YEARS A SLAVE, Steve McQueen
    THE DOUBLE, Richard Ayoade
    HER, Spike Jonze
MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, Joss Whedon
    PRISONERS, Denis Villeneuve
    UNDER THE SKIN, Johnathan Glazer
    THE ZERO THEOREM, Terry Gilliam

I don’t think they’ll go american for president this year. Their last 3 were. And it’s hard to top the trio of Tarantino/Aronofski/Mann in terms of relevance.

WILLIAM FRIEDKIN WILL RECEIVE THE GOLDEN LION FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT

    Via Hit Fix:
The collective mind of the film world may be squarely on Cannes right now, but the Venice Film Festival
    — which runs this year from August 28 to 7 September — has taken this
moment to remind us of its existence by announcing the winner of its
annual Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement: Oscar-winning director William Friedkin.

    And it begins.

GRAVITY, directed by Alfonso Cuaron, will open the Venice Film Festival.

    DEADLINE has the information:
Alfonso Cuarón‘s 3D deep space thriller Gravity, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, will open the 70th Venice Film Festival in an out of competition berth. The Warner Bros.
film will debut on the Lido on August 28. Bullock plays a brilliant
medical engineer on her first shuttle mission alongside a veteran
astronaut played by George Clooney. Disaster strikes during a seemingly
routine spacewalk, leaving the two completely alone – tethered to one
another and spiraling into the blackness. This is the first high-profile
world premiere that Venice has announced thus far.

Also, TWITTER woke up this morning with this tweet:

Congrats to my mate Jonathan Glazer for getting into competition in Venice and Toronto #UnderTheSkin

Yeah, there will be 20-22 movies fighting for the Golden Lion. I guess IndieWire is predicting alternative sections and out of competition premieres movies as well.
