    Thoughts?

    Awards  by Peter Knegt

Indiewire will provide regular updates of our predictions for the 85th Academy Award nominations through January 10th, when the nominations are announced.

Here’s our early take on the best visual effects category, which looks like a race not between summer blockbusters but ambitious fall films that have hopes in bigger categories as well (some likely, others not so much). “Life of Pi” (the likely frontrunner), “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” “Cloud Atlas,” “The Impossible” and “Flight” all could find themselves in the mix against summer hits like “Prometheus,” “The Avengers” and “The Dark Knight Rises.”

Best visual effects predictions below. Check out all predictions in all the categories here.

    .The Predicted 5:
    1. Life of Pi
    2. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
    3. Cloud Atlas
    4. Prometheus
    5. The Avengers

    Possible Spoilers:
    6. The Impossible
    7. Flight
    8. The Dark Knight Rises
    9. Looper
    10. The Amazing Spider-Man

    Longer Shots:
    11. Men In Black 3
    12. The Hunger Games
    13. Skyfall
    14. Snow White and the Huntsman
    15. John Carter

I notice that Total Recall is completely missing from these predix. It’s not a great film, but what was wrong with the visual effects? Nothing, imo.
Would also like to see Chronicle get some attention. But I suppose a small film like this has a Herculean disadvantage with big budget, splashier fare.

I think “Pi” has got to be out in front till we hear different. Your top 5 is the same as mine. But i have TDKR in place of Cloud Atlas.
