It seems to me that the Academy voters are usually going for performances in Oscar-bait films instead of rewarding the best performances year by year. That’s why we have so many bad acting nominees like Alan Arkin in Argo or Jacki Weaver in Silver Linings Playbook, because they don’t really take the time to consider performances from not so well-reviewed or critically acclaimed films. They are like: ‘let’s go with Jacki Weaver for the fifth spot, because Nicole Kidman’s film sucks. Or let’s put Alan Arkin on the list, because he is well-known and he is in the Best Picture front-runner. This is a bummer in my opinion. I rather have good performances in bad movies as Oscar nominees, than bad or not Oscar-worthy turns in well-liked Oscar-bait films as acting nominees. I mean it should be about the performance, not the film. Best Picture is a different category.

For example I think Cynthia Nixon in the Sex and the City film was very strong and would have been just as deserving of an Oscar nomination as the actual Oscar lineup. Her dramatic moments were the best part of a decent film. Her eyes were on fire. You can laugh on my statement, but I stand by it. The performance and the depth were both there. But the movie itself wasn’t at all Academy friendly, so she didn’t have a chance. And there are plenty more performances like this.

    What do you guys think?

Eh, I do very much like her performance but the film itself is so middling, I can’t quite bring myself to bestowing upon it an Oscar nomination.

No. The two Sex movies did a disservice to characters. I was hoping Nixon had the meat she did in the best Miranda centered episodes. She did not. And giving a component performance with such bad material does not mean you deserve a merit badge.

When I read the title I thought that you were talking about Cynthia Nixon winning an Oscar for the TV series and I was about to question your sanity but the answer is no, she should not have been nominated for either of the movies. I agree that the films didn’t do right by the characters so there was nothing that Nixon did in the films that would warrant her nomination I’m afraid. But I’m hoping that she gets nominated in the future and possibly wins.

She was spectacular in Stockholm, Pennsylvania, James White, and this year’s A Quiet Passion. I wish it hadn’t come out so early, it pains me that she gets passed over so much.

But to your original point, SayMyName: I agree that roles in Oscar-bait movies get picked more often than great performances in bad ones. The unfortunate thing about Sex and the City is that even though Nixon was always incredible, in the show and the movies, she barely ever got real plotlines. All I remember is her fight with Carrie which was, as always, about Carrie.

Guys, I wasn’t talking about her performance in both films – only the first one. The second Sex and the City movie is terrible and Nixon is not Oscar-worthy in it.

But your answers kind of proved me right about her performance in the first one. People don’t want to hear about performances which are better than their own films. They don’t want to consider turns which elevate the average material. They just see the bad film (or decent, I don’t think it’s a bad film at all), and they are like: “are you joking?” or “are you insane?” instead of actually taking the effort to see through the issue and consider a good performance no matter what. Like it’s easy to be stellar with a good script, director and picture given.

As of the character, Miranda actually had her own storyline in the first film – her husband has cheated on her, so she had to find a way to forgive him. And her fight with Carrie was about something she said to Mr. Big on their upcoming marriage. Well, it’s definitely enough for me to consider her in supporting. Like I said, her eyes were on fire. It’s like I wasn’t watching the same film. Her acting stood out so much!

Oh and my question is all for the fact that I’m working on my 2008 ballot for my film awards, so I have to re-watch all the 129 films I’ve seen from that year. I already did 50% of it in the past few weeks, and I have re-watched Sex and the City yesterday.

Thank you for the replies! Much appreciated.
