Was the rest of the cast shoo-ins? Such an odd year. The most famous performance in the film loses and all other three win.November 23, 2015 at 3:19 am #198943
At the time Brando wasn’t as universally admired as he is today. There were lots of complaints that he mumbled too much and couldn’t be understood. His method acting was very much frowned upon in places.
This was also only his second film and there was no huge desire to award him so soon. He actually got off to quite a bad start in Hollywood, shunning publicly and being as awkward as possible with interviewers.
He didn’t do any campaigning and wasn’t even in town during the run up.
Bogart on the the other hand was a 20 year veteran, who had never won and extremely popular in the community. He got a publicist and campaigned hard for the award.
On the night Brando was a slight favourite but it was no surprise when Bogart won.November 23, 2015 at 5:45 am #198944
I always thought it was between Bogart and Clift.November 23, 2015 at 5:52 am #198945
Leigh was the shoo inNovember 23, 2015 at 6:05 am #198946
I thought Brando should have been a winner. These days, that type of performance would be shoe-in but I’m guessing the times play a part in him loosing too. Leigh was not good in that film to me. She was so overly dramatic and unbalanced. I wish Hepburn would have won for “African Queen” that year instead of “Guess Who.”November 23, 2015 at 6:25 am #198947
That is the definition of Blanche DuBois. Dramatic and unbalanced. Leigh was brilliant and a shoo-inNovember 23, 2015 at 7:30 am #198949
What babyclyde said.
Brando was one of the very, very, very best. He revolutionized ‘acting’ on this side of the pond.
What a great lineup of nominees that year. All of them would have been worthy winners.
It was Bogart’s time; and about time too.November 23, 2015 at 12:00 pm #198950

I thought her performance looked fake. Could barely watch her. Brando on the other hand was OUTSTANDING!!!! One of the greatest performances ever.
I think the problem is the accent. It’s ever so slightly off and I can’t quite get past it. Surprising because it was pretty much spot on in GWTW.
