EL&IC broke the trend of positively reviewed films getting in for Best Picture (even The Reader had some strong praise, even if it wasn’t exactly 100% welcomed). TWGDT, picked up 5 nods, including winning Editing, which has only gone to BP winners this decade, and got a lot of precursor support (including the DGA, and every film nominated for the DGA since 2010 has gotten in for Best Picture).

If Rudin put his campaign into TGWDT over EL&IC, would it have gotten in?

I have my doubts about that. TGWTDT had to have been a tough sell, despite its Editing win, because it is grim and nasty.

There were other casualties to EL&IC’s incluson, though:
    Bridesmaids
    Harry Potter
    50/50
    Melancholia
    Shame
    Drive
    Take Shelter
    ..the list goes on.

Grim and nasty never stopped a film before. TWOWS got in.

Yes it was. EL&IC is honestly one of the worst films I’ve ever seen.

Tattoo was a head scratcher for me too that it didn’t get in but I understood why. It is a hard watch and 180 for those who were on team Social Network with Fincher and then got this the following year returning him to his more brutally violent crime movies. I personally would have liked to see the final Harry Potter movie recognized (since it is by far better than any of the Lord of the Rings movies) or Bridesmaids since comedies are not doing well at the Oscars like they did in the 80’s like Working Girl and Moonstruck. But this was also the going to 5-10 year which ruined the diversity that the past two years did so well that something like Bridesmaids or any of those other movies could get in. I think on the list of the outliers who didn’t get in, Tattoo is the one that seems like it should have been in but I feel as there were a few others that deserved it more. But the list is longer with movies that deserved a spot over Extremely Loud and Incredibly Boring.

Sorry about the rant…… had a lot of feelings regarding this movie to get off my chest. And sorry about repeating myself so many times, my IPad was being weird, and I’d thought I was logged on when I wasn’t, couldn’t copy and…… yada yada yada.

By the way, a lot of people on these forums have tags that are always there below what they post. How do I add one for my own posts?

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close really is a terrible film, and the fact that it got nominated at all is enough of an insult.

Well thanks for warning me, as I’m an Aspie too. I haven’t seen Extremely Loud yet, so I’ll approach it with trepidation if I ever come round to it.

I “preferred” The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo by FAR. I do recall clearly, being mocked for it by some of the lovelies here for that. I was really happy to see it do as well as it did with Oscar noms.

That other film, with the nom for the iconic Max von Sydow,  for opening and closing his hands at the camera, was a puzzler for me. And the calls for Bullock to get a nomination for that character..lolol fanboys….the people he met along the way were the best ones imo…

The kid didnt annoy me.(!) That’s likely because I’ve been around kids who’d make that one look like he’s asleep.

I’m a fan of Fincher’s. And, despite his record, I’m somewhat worried about an eventual win with the Academy for this man. I feel roughly the same way about his contemporary, Chris Nolan. Will either of these helmers ever win?

Perhaps Daldry if more their cup of tea….”Lipton”, instead of fresh picked and growing wild…

Anyways, hat’s off to the best T-shirt I’ve ever seen worn by a protagonist in a movie before….
