Yes, I finally got our dear pal Sasha Stone to do a webcam chat with me! What FUN! – CLICK HERE:
Someone please pass me a jigger of red wine…..
1st, Im not sure I”m buying into The Revenant being as divisive as people say. Yes there are people who love it and yes there are people who hate it. But that idea may be colored by ones own perception of the film. For instance, I feel that way with The Big Short. I absolutely hate that movie, and I’ve seen others who do a well, but I’ve also seen people who adore it, and you don’t really hear much of, ‘its just ok’. So my perception is kinda jaded with TBS, and I try my best for it not to be.
2nd. I hear what Sasha is saying about the placing on the ballots, but if you just look at some of the Goldderby peoples rankings from the thread Tom posted, we are all over the place with rankings. My personal pick at no1 is Brooklyn, and no2 is The Revenant. They are two films completely at odds but that’s how I felt about them after watching all 8. And I was actually going into TR expecting to hate it. I hated the trailer (it actually made me laugh) plus I’m not a fan of Leo’s at all. Trying to compartmentalize every ones tastes is a logical thing to do when trying to predict but I think more often than not, ones own tastes are more diverse than you’d think.
There’s the “sheep” factor at play as well, as they discussed. Voters shifting and changing their minds at the 11th hour, being influenced by the Guilds, even if they have not seen the film. Naturally, it’s a matter of perspective.
etc etc yadayadayada with any collective.
By the by…..I sooo get what she said about if she hates it, it will win.
That happens to me all the time! If I hate something/someone, winning will take place like 90% of the time. Same if it LOVE something/.someone, it will almost always loses.
This is mostly a good discussion, but Tom says (10 mins in the video):
“All of the predictions at GD are ‘Spotlight’, ‘Spotlight’, ‘Spotlight’. Including not just all users but the top 24 users — people who had the best score last year. By an overwhelming margin, they’re picking ‘Spotlight’. And we just introduced this new thing called the top 24 all-stars…
By an overwhelming number, they’re saying ‘Spotlight’.”
This is 100% untrue.
Here is what the top 24 users are choosing:
10 pick ‘The Big Short’
6 have ‘Spotlight’
6 have ‘The Revenant’
1 has ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ and 1 has ‘Room’
Here is what the top 24 (all-star) users are choosing:
10 pick ‘The Big Short’
8 pick ‘Spotlight’
5 pick ‘The Revenant’
and one has not logged his or her predictions.
So, not only is ‘Spotlight’ not overwhelmingly winning, but it is actually losing to ‘The Big Short’ on both metrics.
