I have always seen movies like Phantom of the Opera that were expected for greatness, but ended up with no critical success and barely any or no Oscar nominations. What are some more examples?September 3, 2012 at 4:54 pm #68922

I remember in 1999 both The Shipping News and Angela’s Ashes getting a lot of pre-Oscar attention.

“Evening” is a big one from recent years.September 3, 2012 at 6:48 pm #68929
‘Never Let Me Go’ (sure sounded good on paper, though I still quite enjoyed the film myself, especially the performances), ‘Into The Wild’ (only scoring one major nomination in Hal Holbrook for Supporting Actor), ‘American Gangster’ (also only one major nomination in Ruby Dee for Supporting Actress), and to a lesser extent ‘War Horse’. I think they were all expected to be pretty significant contenders but ultimately fell short.September 3, 2012 at 7:02 pm #68930

I love this film. Of the year it has my favorite score, and one of my favorite supporting actress perfs. Odd thing is, the screenplay isnt what I would have given the one nomination for.
