For the last decade, arguably every year has had a foreign language film nominated in a category other than Best Foreign Film. The only year this hasn’t happened in the last ten years is 2008, but even then the best picture winner (Slumdog Millionaire) had a significant portion of the film was in Hindi.
With this knowledge, what foreign films are most likely to break through the Foreign Language barrier and get nominations in other categories?
Right now, the likeliest possibility that I see is “First They Killed My Father” in adapted screenplay, mainly because the category is so week right now.
while I currently don’t have any in my predictions I certainly want 120 Beats per Minute to be nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay (it’s best bet for a nomination, even though that category is the most crowded of all this year – actually, the fact that there are so many viable potential nominees is why I think it could happen since it will simply need passion votes among the writer’s branch), Best Film Editing….
Barring a huge oversight on my part, I think this will be a rare year without a single nomination for a non-English language film outside of the foreign film category, with the possible exception of another G-KIDS film apart from The Breadwinner getting in. That said, Call Me by Your Name has sizeable portions of French and Italian dialogue, not unlike Slumdog Millionaire’s Hindi.
Maybe Daniela Vega in best actress, although I see it very difficult.
