I must claim ignorance on the history of how studios play the Oscar game.  But I remember Amy Pascal as the head of Sony which distrubted Social Network.  I remember being horrified at the lack of urgency of the team behind Social Network that year which of course resulted in a once unstoppable force losing to Harvey W.

Fast forward 2 years later and a once unstoppable force Zero Dark Thirty has all but been neutered in the nominations and has been IMO unfairly labeled as pro torture.  The attacks and smears have been relentless and the pushback from the team behind it has been limp and weak.  It now has no chance to win Best Picture and categories it has a legit shot at (Actress, Screenplay) are falling out of reach by the day.

Based on my,limited knowledge this is not a very good track record for Ms. Pascal.  She seems to be a amateur in terms of championing her studios films during awards season and playing the game aggressively compared to Harvey, Dreamworks, Fox, etc.  If my film came under the amount of scrutinity as ZDT did I would do everything I could to highlight the inaccuracies in my competitiors (which Argo/Lincoln have) or atleast try to undercut a film that has an ICK factor (Silver Linings age difference between the leads) to help out a category we could win.  Pascal seems to have been played like a fiddle 2 times in 2 years.

Yay!!! But, it’s still in the mix.

Amy Pascal is a female executive in a man’s world, Kudos to her. It’s not as if Sony doesnt have other films, and I certainly dont blame her for Skyfall falling short of a BP nomination.

Pook, I must have missed your ZDT review.  I see your not a fan.

I can’t believe I missed this thread.  I absolutely agree.  I think Amy Pascal and the Sony team dropped the bomb, and let a decisive win for Zero Dark Thirty slip through their fingers during the nomination period in December.  Issuing no response when the torture controversy first erupted was detrimental–losing at least four key nominations: director (one of the worst snubs I have ever seen), cinematography, sound mixing, and score.  Hell, if they were more aggressive from the get-go they could’ve gotten Jason Clarke in the boring Best Supporting actor lineup: the performance-caliber was obviously there.  There was an article in The Hollywood Reporter that said that Harvey wanted to produce the film…Bigelow should’ve went with him.  He would have gone to bat for her and the film much stronger than Sony has done.

But Harvey would not have given Bigelow the freedom that Sony probably did.

I’m not sure I believe, that Harvey wanted to produce ZD30. He may have been interested initially, but he’s intelligent enough to realize that any power issues with the film, he would lose.
