My way way way out on a limb Oscar prediction for 2013 is Julia Roberts for Best Supporting Actress. It’s hard to see how Jennifer Lawrence wins 2 years in a row at such a young age (besides, imo, she is miscast and dreadful in her role), and Lupita Nyong’o is a complete unknown – so I think enough voters will have enjoyed August: Osage County (far more entertaining than most of the Best Picture contenders this year) and also, Julia Roberts has something else going for her: she’s actually the LEAD in her movie, therefore she has more screen time, and delivers a really terrific performance!
I really don’t have any other way out there predictions – I choose either the 1st or 2nd odds on favorite to win in all the other categories – any categories where you believe the academy is going to surprise us on Oscar night?February 18, 2014 at 9:33 am #141359
I agree about Julia. I also want Abdi to win. Such a great performance.February 18, 2014 at 9:42 am #141360
It’s not exactly ‘way out on a limb’, but I think I’m going to pick Chiwetel as my Best Actor winner. That’s the only acting category where I expect an upset, and I don’t think it will be DiCaprio. Not to mention that Best Actor has a tendency to line up with Best Picture, or at least a strong Best Picture contender.February 18, 2014 at 9:45 am #141361
Director: Steve McQueen (though this is a stretch, Cuaron is definitely going to win)
Sup. Actor: Barkhad Abdi (maybe…)
Sup. Actress: Jennifer Lawrence
Original Screenplay: American Hustle
Original Score: Her
Film Editing: Captain PhillipsFebruary 18, 2014 at 9:56 am #141362
Ejiofor, if that counts.February 18, 2014 at 10:05 am #141364
Best Supporting Actor- Jonah Hill.February 18, 2014 at 10:37 am #141365
Barkhad Abdi for supporting actor; and I think with that BAFTA in his grip, he is a serious dark horse contender.February 18, 2014 at 10:56 am #141366
Jonah HillFebruary 18, 2014 at 11:10 am #141367
None of my predictions are really “out on a limb”. I just have a feeling we are going to have a predictable but good OscarsFebruary 18, 2014 at 11:27 am #141368
I would say Jonah Hill.
But as usual, I can see Emmanuel Lubezki loosing in one of the biggest shocks of the night.February 18, 2014 at 12:10 pm #141369
My faith will not waver in Leonardo DiCaprio. Even though he isn’t an “out on a limb” choice. I’m sticking by him no matter what.February 18, 2014 at 12:36 pm #141370
The Lone Ranger for Make-up & Hair- StylingFebruary 18, 2014 at 1:19 pm #141371
The Lone Ranger was the only of the three Oscar nominees to go home emptyhanded from the makeup and hairstlying guild awards, so that would be quite the upset.
