I was thinking that usually, at this point, there’s a few performances that have major buzz for Oscar nominations. Sometimes it turns out they do make the final 5, sometimes they don’t…but usually we have seen some contenders at least. At this point, there doesn’t seem to be many:

Rachel Weisz, The Deep Blue Sea – outstanding reviews, film has the pedigree; she would need major support from the critical groups at the end of the year to become a major contender. I was hoping “To The Wonder” would help build her buzz for a nomination for this, but now she’s been cut out.

Anne Hathaway, The Dark Knight Rises – it could have happened, but she’s got Les Miserables coming which will get all the push. Her performance as Selina will definitely help propel her to a win for Les Miz.

Charlize Theron, Snow White And The Huntsman – I thought this could have happened, and she could still score a Globe nod, but her buzz seems to have faded big-time.

    Who else?

Are we anointing Hathaway for sure now? Oscar is  a long way off.  Not that I wouldnt wish to see her win.

I hope Quvenshane Wallis gets a nomination in Lead. I’d also like to see someone from Lawless get a nomination. Mark Wahlberg is terrific in Ted, but that likely isnt going to happen.

Anyways, the question asks what Oscar-worthy perfs I’ve seen this year. Rachel Weisz is her usual brilliant self in The Deep Blue Sea; if anyone can follow-up Vivien Leigh, it’s Rachel. But that film has some problems imo. I’d be pretty surprised if the film gains any momentum and voters actually watch it.

The best performance I’ve seen so far this year was given by Michelle Williams in Take This Waltz.

For a terrific ensemble, look no further than the cast of Killer Joe (Mathew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church, and Gina Gershon).

As far as Oscar nomination-worthy goes, surely Jennifer Lawrence, Elizabeth Banks and either Woody Harrelson or Stanley Tucci from The Hunger Games.  Also Christian Bale, Anne Hathaway and Ton Hardy for The Dark Knight Rises.  And for The Avengers, Robert Downey Jr., Tom Hiddleston and Mark Ruffalo.

Jennifer Lawrence, Wallis, and Anne Hathaway were all Oscar worthy.

And can we Please keep all this Les Miz expectations on lock until someone sees the film? I do love Hathaway (and wish to see her win an Oscar.) but to say this film is her Oscar vehicle and will win her the Oscar at this time of the season is pure ridiculous. For all we know her DKR performance might trumph it. Last year I remember we would get our heads bitten off if we dared to say Streep was a frontrunner for The Iron Lady.

O for sure. Any of us who loved her perf were called ‘stans’, ‘fanboys’, yaddayadda. Lol. Just because we like someones perf we’re automatically stans. I believe it’s already begun with Hathaway. If we like her, then we’re obviously ‘fanboys’. Haha.

I am going to say Jennifer Lawrence for some extremely emotional scenes in The Hunger Games. For example: When Katniss is screaming at her mother to look at her, or the whole death of Rue.

Jennifer Lawrence. I would not be terribly surprised if Jen won in February. I just saw the film for the first time when it came out on demand, and I had long cast away the posts that mentioned her as a potential contender. But at the end of the movie, I was stirred and moved by her strikingly beautiful performance. Looking at the line-up, which has just gotten smaller after the reviews of Hyde Park on Hudson, Jen could win. Wow, that could be a chant. Jen for the win! Jen for the win! Jen for the win!

The only performance this year so far that I thought was outstanding was Rachel Weisz in THE DEEP BLUE SEA. I know it’s not the answer you are looking for but it’s the truth.

Jennifer Lawrence was good, but she was a lot better in WINTER’S BONE.

Apparently THG is some sort of trilogy–more chopping, stabbing, and adolescent lust on the way!

I think Rachel Weisz and Tom Hiddleston were terrific in The Deep Blue Sea. I hope Hiddleston goes supporting and he might actually get a nod then!
