The title explains itself. What do you consider to be the biggest shocker of the 2016-2017 Pre-Oscar and Oscar Film Awards Season? Not just Oscars, but also Golden Globes, BAFTA, Critics Choice, and so on and so forth.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson winning Best Supporting Actor at the Golden Globes. Literally no one, not even him, saw that coming.

Moonlight is the oubvious answer, but there are others. Ben Foster winning Indie spirit over Lucas Hedges. ATJ winning the globe. Simon Helberg getting a nomination at the Globes. Arrival beating La La Land at sound editing at the Oscars (which I predicted), Lion winning cinematography at the Guild. Deadpool getting a WGA and PGA nomination. Denzel winning SAG (which I predicted), nocturnal animals and HoHW doing suprisingly well at the globes.

The biggest gasp moment for me, apart from the obvious, is still when Emily Blunt was nominated at SAG. Just so shocking given that she couldn’t make it in with the Globes who love her more than anyone else.

Arrival beating La La Land at sound mixing at the Oscars (which I predicted)

Arrival actually won for sound editing. Hacksaw Ridge won for sound mixing.

That and Fantastic Beasts winning Costume Design.

Matt Noble predicted that Costume Design upset by Fantastic Beasts. But yeah, BESIDES Matt, no one else did. Funny, I literally laughed at him when in the Oscars pre-show he said he was predicting that movie to win Costumes. I thought, “What an idiot, everyone knows Bafta and Critics Choice winner Jackie has this in the bag!” Now I look like the idiot LOL!

    Fantastic Beasts winning Costume Design.

I’d always had doubts about Jackie winning Costumes, even though I ended up predicting it in the end. My initial observation about the Costume Oscar regularly going to films with crowd scenes held true; I was just backing the wrong crowd-scene film (La La Land). I might have predicted Fantastic Beasts to win if I’d thought enough Academy members were watching it, although Bafta complicated things further by awarding it for Production Design but not Costumes.

I came very close to predicting FFJ myself, so the shock was not that Jackie lost, but that Fantastic Beasts won. I still can’t explain it myself. FFJ/LLL/Jackie vote-splitting?
